My Tank Build
#1
Hello I'm Eric, this will b my online journal of my new build. This time I'm going to try to do a better job of recording the info.
Got a great deal on a whole set up. Tank, sump, pumps, live rock, sand, algae turf scrubber and stand. The stand wasn't going to match anything in my house, so it looks like I'm building my self a stand/canopy set.
This is what I got yesterday
Tank

Sump

it's a 70 gallon, I took the trimming off and the center brace.
ATS

Live rock

These are the lights I'll be using

@Mike. Yea I'm going to run both skimmer and ATS. I'm going to start with only running the skimmer an hour a day and see how it goes.

Spent the better part of my day cleaning the tank and sump. I took all the paint off the back off the tank and scrapped all the coraline and algae on the inside.

Then took out all the baffles out of the sump and scrapped off all the silicone. Then added vinegar water to the sump to clean ever thing off. I'll be putting baffles next weekend.

Well I got up early as hell this morning and went down to lowes and bought a bunch of 2+4's. Came home and busted out the power tools. The top and bottom framing

The stand framed half way

This is what I ended up with be for lunch

If u noticed the foot end hanging out off the right side. That is going to be a cabinet. Sense it's going to be a peninsula tank I'm going the put a cabinet on the side against the wall. The stand will be a little over 7' long. All my controllers will be going in the cabinet.

After lunch I fit the sumps in the stand to see what I could do to make my 70gal sump and 30gal sump. Yes I said two sumps. The 70gallon sump is going to be hold equipment, like skimmer & reactors. The 30gallon sump will be housing my algae turf scrubber/fuge and my be in the future a frag tank.

Well after making sure the two sump would fit. I then contemplated for a few hours on how I was going to get the 30gal sump to sit over the 70g. Well I finally came up with the idea of a hanging sump. So I cut two notches out of the back wall of the sump and drilled 32 holes in the top rim. I'm not sure if it's going to work but thought it might sense there is only going to be around 3 to 4 gallons of water in the sump.
Hopefully this will work

I'm going to go get stainless steal screws to hold the sump in place. I'm going to paint the sides, back , and bottom of the acrylic sump black and leave the front clear.
Well this is what I came up with

The white container is going to be my top off reservoir.

Wow looks great. I will say that having the one sump hanging scares me a little bit. It only having 4-4 gal of water should be ok but it still is scary. I have no carpentry skills, wish I did but nope. Great job keep us posted

Looking great, Eric! Why did you decide to split the sumps? I'm paying close attention... We're actually on our way right now to look at a 190g setup but it was in wall so we'll be building a stand for it, too, if we decide to get it...
Tips? What are you using to frame it? Looks like 2 x 4's?

I really wanted to have more then half off the 70gal as a reservoir of water. So if I forgot to fill my makeup water reservoir I would have a good day or two of water in my sump. Ideally I wanted 20 or 30 gallons available in the bottom sump so when I do water changes I won't mess the the tank. I'm going to T off the return line and ball valve all the lines. So when I want to do a water change all I have to do is close the ball valve headed to the tank and open the ball valve to drain.

The 30 gal is really only to catch the water from the algae turf scrubber.

Yes they are 2 by 4's. 12 of them to be exact.

Tip don't build a stand when its over a 100 outside.

This pic was took at 10am. By noon I had the sprinklers on and I was running through them.

I like the hanging tank. Shouldn't be a problem with just a few gallons. Looking forward to progress
