So Im going to set up a reef tank and wanted to try black sand. But before I go ahead and purchase it, I wanted to see feedback from any fellow reefers who have tried black sand or currently have it on their tanks. Thanks guys

I'd say if you like it then go for it. Here are a few drawbacks to consider so you know what to expect:

Black sand tends to be attracted to magnets therefore likes to cling onto magnetic algae scrubbers. So be careful when you're cleaning towards the bottom of your tank. Also, may need to clean your flow pumps more regularly. Also, black doesn't mean it will hide more detritus. I've seen mats of mulm and detritus that shows more in black sand and it looks pretty dingy. With that said, black sand does make corals and fish pop since there's more contrast.

I don't like black sand much. I like white as it's more of a natural light reflector for my corals underside as light reflects back up. But do what you like.

Black Sand is magnetic. You will need the Tunze glass scrapper and you will not have any scratches when using it. I have a black sand setup for 4 years. It is beautiful. I have never had any problems with flow pumps and black sand. The major drawback is that the material is magnetized and so be careful with any scraper that isn't the Tunze Care Magnet. Have fun.

Black sand looks great when new. Sadly it does not stay that way long. It will show everything, just like a black car.
