Hey everyone,
I've been mixing my own salt for about 2 years now. I changed water every 2 weeks. I've been keeping a mixing pump (Eheim) in the reservoir running 24 hours, is that necessary? Can I keep the pump on a timer and run it for like 8 hours a day?

It depends on how long the saltwater is in the mixing container. So if you can tell us how long the water is in the mixing container we can better help you.

Have you ever tested your RoDi water for phosphates when it sits in that vat? My question is loaded, I noticed when I let my RODI sit my bin is leaching a small amount of phosphates. It's food grade and new. Weird crap but it's happening.

You can run the pump on a timer. However, your ph will drop if you don't atleast aerate the water in the duration. Stagnate water no good.

I always wonder why you guys go through such hassel mixing your own water rather than buying it at the LFS....doesn't it just cost pretty much the same but less time in mixing?

nope, its way cheaper mixing it yourself.

also alot of lfs don't even change the filters. Some have high TDS, some mix at a lower salinity, some use cheap salt etc etc. better to know exactly what is going in your tank.

Not to be off topic but does this mean I need an air pump / powerhead 24hours running in my trash can full of ATO water?

I 2nd on that. It's the peace of mind that we know exactly what we are putting into our tank.

YeAh I buy water at .15 a gallon, 200 gallon salt mix is 45 bucks so that's 75 for 200 gal of quality, I know what I'm getting saltwater...at .38 a gallon!
