To Dip or Not

Hi,

Picked up a couple of sweet pieces at Age of Aquariums yesterday. Star polyps (very fluorescent) and a combo rock with zoas, bubble nem, shroom, couple of what appear to be colts, and a small plate.

Asked them if they dip their coral. Recently saw an ad about this...got me curious. I have never dipped in the past. They said they frequenly dip and most pieces get dipped about 5 times before sale, but they recommended an additional dip, which I didn't do for a variety of reasons. Don't even own the stuff.

So...do people mainly dip or not?

Cheers,

Dave

Yes And please check out the thread on Bayer advanced as a dip. That stuff is the best. And dirt cheap.

I think this is what needs to go through your head when you don't dip, and or qt.

1) if it has something it will multiply in your tank.

2) you are gonna get other corals in your tank infested.

3) I just wasted my money by not assuring the health of my tank. Surely I will be throwing corals in the trash soon because of my laziness

4) unless the store you bought it from is ran by God, no one can assure you a clean coral EVER!

Or.. Am I willing to loose everything I have in order to add this without dipping.

Hey Dave, never trust the local fish store. They might not have bad intentions but sometimes even they don't know what's on their stuff

anyone here uses advance bayer here? I want to try that but wanted to get some feed back from reefers on this forum that have used this product....is the advance bayer for only SPS or can we and should us this on every corals like LPS, and zoas as well? Also how long after the dip and fresh water bath do we need to wait for until we can put it in our DT?

Do a search on the forum watchman123 did an extensive thread on the subject.

To be brief it works on all coral. It kills everything that is living on the coral and on the plug. I've used it on zoas, acros, Lps, and softies. You would be amazed the amount of life on some frags.

You need clean saltwater in one bin to shake of the dip before it re-enters the display. I wait 1 minute. I dipped every piece in my tank twice in the last month and no pieces ever browned out or died.

It's a very effective and inexpensive dip. Highly recommend it. I have many bottles of coral Rx and stopped using it because this stuff is just plain better at stripping the new coral of all living hitchhikers.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it.

I think the reason that I have not dipped has been mostly being unaware about it as an issue. I've never been advised by a shop to do so, and have caught only inklings of suggestions over the years. However I would also say that to my knowledge I have not had a parasite problem from corals; I think my bigger problem has been water chemistry problems from time to time or in my pre-chiller days, temperature.

So joining this site is definetly a help.

With all your input in mind in the future I will dip everything. I'm planning on attending the show in Costa Mesa in April to buy some pieces (got some outstanding deals at Reefapalooza in 2011 so I'm hoping the deals will also be good there) and will definetly dip first.

Kind of wishing someone who is very experienced and lives nearby would be willing to come out and check out my set-up to see that everything is groovy.....

Cheers,

Dave

Once you invest enough money into your tank you should want to dip everything. I always dip, wont take the risk of some unwanted hitch hikers killing my prized corals.

+1 Dip
