Bastards got me! I'm a newbie so when i went to this place everything looked legit and the guys were pretty friendly. i bought a mushroom for five bucks and was happy with my visit. I went in a second time and decided to buy this small frag in a box of rubble they had. It had 3 pieces of coral on it, tiny bit of xenia/1 zoa polyp/ and 1 bubble mushroom. I asked the guy how much for the mushroom, he said $5. I thought cool i get 2 other tiny peices that will eventually grow and all 3 for $5 bucks. While looking around online for critters i should watch out for in my tank, i came across a photo of an Aiptasia-mojano. Surprisingly i realized thats exactly what i bought from them thinking it was a bubble mushroom! Needles to say i will never be going to that store again. People like that mess this hobby up by giving false info and selling crap. If i hadnt been looking online for more tank info i would have left that thing in my tank to multiply and trash my tank. Luckily i was able to take it out of my tank and trash it before any harm was done.

Same thing happened to me when I first got started. Corraline wasn't growing so went looking for a rock with some on it to get it started. I ended up getting aptaisia, mojanos, and bubble algae. And 1 zoa. Had no idea.

Getting pests isn't the end of the world, paying for them is. We all have to do research and shop around more. We've all gone to the LFS as noobs and have paid for more then what something is worth. As you get more experience though you might get lucky and find an underpriced piece.

I understand that everyone gets pests, but everyone doesnt pay for pests on purpose like i did. That MF knew i i thought it was a nice mushroom and he sold it to me. We talked for a while too and I told him how im new to the hobby and starting a tank. Oh well lesson learned, research before I buy anything, clean frags before they go in my tank, and stay the hell away from Total Fish in Alhambra.
Lol this made my day...everyone eventually gets pests. Call it a learning experience.

Try to find a small 1-2 gallon tank so you can QT your coral for at least a day. You want to use some type of intense lighting like an led flash light to inspect the piece. Also remove plugs whenever possible. Add a new plug. Aiptasia is hard to see but if you know what you're looking for its a cinch to remove them. And fun.

Here are some wise words from the Dalai

Numbers 2. And 7. Apply to you.

I went to a petshop in Redlands a few weeks back just to see if the had any nems. The kid that was working there was trying to sale me aiptaisas as anemones. I looked at him and said dude u sale those to people to make a buck. That's a pest anemone. I feel bad for ur customers.

It happens to everybody in this hobby in one form or another. :) When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Make a "pest" only tank! That would be awesome!
