I tried vodka for a couple months, it works, my skimmate was much darker, and my corals showed more polyp extension, nitrates and phosphates were 0.
I can also see my SPS coloring up nicely.

I really dont know if it is a good thing with a mixed reef.

I stopped when I started to get more zoo's, palys, and chalices, they like a little gunk in the water

i have a mixed reef and have noticed no downsides to the vodka dosing. in the first week color on all my corals improved, especially my sps. i've always had brown corals because i feed so much, not any more. i'm up to 3.5ml a day on my 180g and my skimmer pulls out the nastiest thickest black crap i've ever seen. my chalices, zoa's, hammer, candycanes all look great, so i wouldn't worry.

There will come a time like with ZEO, that your tank will be a true ULNS, and your corals will suffer from lack of nutients. I had to dose tons of different foods for my chalice's and zoos to keep the tissue extended and zoos open.

What is diifferent with zeo, is the shaking of the stones provides food for the corals. (MULM)

With Vodka and good skimmer you are removing only from the water.

well, i see what you are saying. but if you never get to the amount of vodka that would remove all of your nutrients, you won't have the issue with too clean of water. i am probably not even to the half way point of my dosing ability, and i overfeed my tank, and feed my corals weekly. my chaeto still grows like crazy, so i know i'm not pulling all the nutrients out. i only started the vodka for color improvement, and i've got it, so i don't need to keep adding to the dosage to go for "ultra clean" water.

i heard that Vodka dosing eats up your oxygen in your tank so a very strong skimmer is need to inject the air. Also the skimmer will work more efficient as it pulls out more crap.

The strong skimmer is more for removing the bacteria, with a side benefit as highly oxygenated water. The idea is that bacteria consumes the undesirable P and N, and then the powerful skimmer pulls out this bacteria in the water column. Depleted O2 can be a problem if you overdose, and get a bacterial bloom.

I had good results with vodka after having a zeo tank.

Now I do weekly water changes and I am getting the same result and coloration as with zeo and vodka.

My new salt tropic marin is awesome salt, why did I not change a long time ago, thank you (Edwinn!!)

Everytime I go in Tom's shop and think about restarting Zeo and look at the prices for it, and I change my mind

Mr Pohl need's to start having recession prices.:wavey:

So do you guys feed your fish a lot more since your dosing vodka? Extra fish poop for the sps without worrying about nitrate and phosphate???

In most cases, like mine, you're already feeding more due to an excessive bioload, hence the starting of vodka dosing.
