Hey guys,
I was wondering if a water softener will have any ill-effects on the saltwater aquarium. Our house just added one and now the whole house gets soft water. Will it mess up my ro/di unit? Let me know

One more thing, so the waste water can't be used to water the plants now? Does it have a slight salinity to it still? Thanks!

Waste water from a softener has salinity that will kill your plants. RO waste water is ok for plants. Water softener doesnt produce lots of waste water compared to a RO.

Technically you shouldnt even use regular softened water to water your sensitive indoor plants ie Orchids because of the very, very slight salinity increase that softened water carries.

well if the softened water goes into the ro/di unit...and then ro/di makes waste water, will that have salinity?

That will be fine. I use it all the time. Just dont use the waste water from the softener. You probably dont see it since its probably plumbed to your sewer line if the softener was installed correctly.

I thought you took the water from the cold side before the water heater. From there it only went to the hotside for baths and laundry not all cold water????? Otherwise your lawn is dead and your water to rinse your mouth at your sink will also be salty.

Connecting an RO to the cold side before the water heater is correct but not for water softeners.
An ideal setup like my home is the water main to my house is split into two. One for the sprinklers and one for the entire house. Tap the water softener into your home water main so it provides soft water both the cold and hot water. Softened water does not taste salty nor does it have any after taste.

Cool. I'm installing one this month as well. My water is awful and we all have have skin issues because of it.
