So I am leaving with my family for a week long vacation in Mexico. What should I do about feeding my fish? I am leaving this weekend, so I don't have much time. So what would you do if you were in my shoes?

Have a friend come by and feed your fish & empty your skimmer every other day.

Where in Tustin do you live... thinking I might be able to help you out *(or have we?) as I also live in Tustin but we've never met and you leave in a week. Your skimmer should be fine... you could always get a autofeeder but those arent the greatest.

Maybe for some frags?

Or Coral Gazers is also in Tustin and they may do service work as well.

Just throwing it out there.

I can do it for you when I go to work...I work in Irvine by the John Wayne Airport if you want to pay me for the service...I will take a nice coral from you as payment instead of cash =)

Sorry guys no frags, that is way I only asked about the fish. I have no corals other than some Eagle Eyes after that AZ NO3 stuff killed all my corals. No automatic feeders for me, because the just don't seem reliable to me.

There is no really other way. The best bet is fish sitting. There are alot of what if's.

What if a fish died and your CUC did not do its job and you got a massive nitrate spike?

What if somehow your lights accidentaly got switched to ON instead of AUTO.

What if theres a leak?

I think its worth to pay someone atleast $10 a visit to checkup on your tank. :top:

Cody (if I may call you that), thanks for the very generous offer. I finally found a neighbor that would do it. They agreed to come over early so that I can show them how the system works, so now if anything happens they should know what to do.

Fish only need to eat every other day. What might be more of a concern is evaporation if the weather is hot. I always get one of my daughters friends to come every other day and feed the fish and make sure the water in the sump is up to a certain line which I draw on the side (keep it simple). I also pay her $10 every time she comes. If you feed them just before you leave and when you come back it should only cost you about $20-$30.

most reefers prob spent their vacation $$$ on their tanks...

its OK because they're so worried about their "investment" that they dont want to leave town anyway...

so they end up staying home and spending that souvenir $$$ on a limited edition frags and have to justify it to their significant other who spots it right away and nags him straight to the bar...

I went to Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen for 6 days. My sister fed 3 times. I did trial runs weeks before. Skimmed real dry, ato become double the size, fed once every other day, started changing water every other week. Preparation and all is great. My phosphates rose but that's cause the reactor needed a tap, stupid maxi jets. Next vacation 2 weeks.

Screw a tank, I'm no slave! not to this not to anything. Live people. If your paranoid get a freaking ip camera and an apex. Besides feedings my tank can go un manned for 3 weeks no problem. Glass would be gross though.

Lesson learned the hard way. I've had a 24G Nanocube for 2 years in San Clemente. 2 weeks ago I went away for 4 weeks. I had a non-aquarist feed my fish, small pinch of pellets every two days All were dead when I returned (clown, 6linewrasse, yellow tang, pseudo). Only my pistol shrimp, cleaner shrimp & cleaning crew & corals survived. I'll certainly be more careful to train someone in the future. Could I just have not fed them at all for 6 days?
