Take it slow. Buy the better product even if it cost more. I'm 16 and I had to find that out the hard way. U will end up getting the better product anyways and u will have wasted good coral money on cheep junk that didn't work. And as what to put in the tank fish wise id say a tang or a couple of tangs would look nice in there, maybe some gobies, anthias, wrasse(read up and make sure the one u buy is reef safe) a school of chromis always looks nice. And establish a cleaner crew ASAP because it will be less work the sooner u slow the junk(algae and stuff) down. It will make maintenance alot easier!

I would take it very slow when it comes to SPS in your tank. i say a moth is not long enough to cycle through. Things will also change after you start putting in live stock. I say start out with a couple of easy to keep fish and a buch of cleaning crew and slowly work your way in. SPS should be the last you put in your tank.

I had some alge growth for a bit because I had my lights on to see if they worked but now that they are off the alge is gone.

I'd wait on all those sps man, your tank still has to age.. same with the Nems, give it another month or two. The best thing u can do now is set up ur sump, add some fish (nothing ecpensive) and give it a week. Add a clean up crew (hermits, snails, shrimp, crabs, ect.) Then in one month if everything is stable then maybe add a few cheap frags. Then move ur way up. Props on starting big tho!

What is that skimmer rated for? What skimmer is it?

What type of power heads are using inside the tank?

Green pocci and monti okay for now. Maybe RP but as mentioned above if you can wait on sps give it a goose while. I've even been told up to 6 months. No one really waits that long but, that tank maturity thing plays a role.

I'm on my 2 nd Sps tank and after 6 months most of my LE Sps are just looking good from the transfer. Sps get expensive you don't wanna buy the same piece twice.

Stock up in good stuff like reactors and media. A nice powerhead, a great lighting fixture, leave the corals down the line.

My cousins tank cycled in early August it has 3 fish and thats all.

wickedfish- I have the Eshopps S-120 Economy Cone Skimmer and its rated for 40-120g tanks. i have no power heads right now but the return pump is putting out a lot of flow with a t- fitting in my tank.

Gonna need at least 2 power heads. Pushing a good 3000gph all together. As much as I hate the tinkering with them the mp40 might be a good start. I had one mp40 and two koralia's rated at 1500+ gph each.

Most 120's I know have 2 mp40's on reef crest 3/4 strength to full.

GL wait in the coral.

Best advice I can give is to wait on the corals. SPS are very difficult to keep and need a well established tank(all the corals you have on order are SPS, fyi)

Start with some hardier fish, the clowns would be a good start. A nice school of chromis in that sized tank would be nice. I know there is a reefer selling some right now. PM me for his info.

Patience!

Finally, have fun, it is a great hooby, but both expensive and addicting...

no offense you sound like a noob.....and thats okay......if you are take your time.....or if you dont mind wasting money go for it....but take it slow if you are....if you are dedicated you wil be fine...if yu have experience you will be fine....but if you are a noob....you will kill alot of things....take it slow till you know your tank is ready and good...

if you are a noob and want to do sps

start with monti caps..then a sps frag...then start building it up....it really doesnt matter your experience you always take it slow....mainly beacuase nobody wants to drop a grand just to see it die...it is discouraging at least....you will get there but it wil take time

I see alot of pretty expensive skeletons in your future . Your moving way to fast and simply dont have the knowledge. Imho id have some hold all those coral you just bought intill you have a better understanding and your tank matures a little more unless you like throwing money away.

BigDaddyStar- well to be open with you, you are coming off a little hard on a saltwater noob, and yes i know whats its like to start tanks. this will be my forth tank. the only thing thats differnt is its salt tank. so yeah it sounds like im lost and its not that im 100% lost but that there is a lot to take in when it comes to a salt tank vs a fresh water tank. So i have talked with the person that I got the frags from and he and I have come to a agrement that he well hold on the frags tell my tank is ready. so im taking it slow. no worrys. and to end my post here, i came he for advice not to be talked down to.

Hello cspider120,

I'm new also to saltwater tanks but I've kept many freshwater tanks for years. I never realized how expensive saltwater tanks are/can be until I started piecing all of my equipment together. My tank is around 2 months old now and it just finished cycling about 3 weeks ago. Right now, I have a goby, 2 platinum clowns, xenias, zoas, and clove polyps along with my clean up crew of snails, cleaner shrimp, fighting conch, and 1 hermit crab. They are all doing great right now except for the clowns which I just got at RAP and are kinda stressed still. I think I'm going to let it run like this for now in my 100 gallon tank. I, too, don't want to overload the tank too soon.

This forum helped me out alot and I suggest keep reading up and searching through the threads for help. Buy a good test kit, and keep a good log. I have an iPhone and there is an app for keeping a record of all my tests I do such as ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, pH, mag, cal, alk, etc. I can even put in the date I changed the bulbs and when I should change it. Good luck with your tank and post updates.

Whats the app called sounds cool.

And to the newb... Haha jk. i started a 40 last year, put fish in. Then tried a coral, xenia, and killed and melted over night. I Learned why it happened ,adjusted then progressed and turned it into a full reef of lps and ,softies throughout the whole tank and jam packed full of them. Then tried a greeen millie sps(small polyp stoney) and died because of rtn overnight. Learned why, and fixed it. Now with all that knowledge and experience i built my 120 piece by piece and stocked it with what i KNEW i was comfortable getting(with a few exceptions :) )
Anyways Moral of story, take it slow and stick on the forum. We can help you like everyone has helped me and others. Its better to learn what i and others did wrong than learn first hand ya know haha

And btw you unlike others did do something very good and started with a big tank. Much easier and stable than smaller tanks. Goodluck with the progress and experience
