My name is Mariano and I live in Alhambra. I've been a freshwater Planted tank guy for over a year now and the wife decided she wanted a saltwater tank for her and the kids, so guess who is going to take care of it. I've always admired saltwater tanks but always heard they were too expensive and too much maintenance. I picked up a used 8 gallon tank that a fellow SCAPEr (Southern California Aquatic Plant Enthusiast) was selling when he was trying his hands in the saltwater world. It came with live sand, live rock, an HOB filter, a 24 watt light white/actinic, a circulating pump, salinity tester, and a whole lot of algae! He had it always running but just lost interest and let it go to hell so nothing was alive in it when i picked it up. I spent a week cleaning it every other day and letting it run till i got it as clean as i could. I did a 100% water change, threw in a small zoa frag, a turbo snail, a couple hermits, and nassauris snails. Everything has been surviving for the past month now so i bought 2 clown fish and a few more pieces of coral. I found this site while looking through Craigslist for frags so now here i am. Looking forward to learning anything you guys have to teach me, i know i have a lot to learn and i would rather not learn the hard way. Thanks in advance:hello:

Welcome to SocaliReef Mariano! Glad to see your wife got you into saltwater tanks. Looks like you are heading the right direction. Who knows, the future my hold you up for a larger tank upgrade. Then you can say this hobby is expensive. :)

^^^^^The absolute truth.^^^^^

But it's fun and addicting and once you get things dialed in it's a sense of pride that's tough to beat. Welcome to the boards; this is a great place to meet people and learn new things so long as you've got a great sense of humor and don't take things too seriously.

Welcome to the addiction. Looks like you are on the right path. I can tell you from expierence and many others can too, that 8g is not going to last long. El dude is right, once saltwater gets into your head your tank is never big enough. When I started almost ten years ago I went from a 12 to a 20 to a 60 to a 150g all in 4 months....lol

That's when it gets expensive

Oh man I've already been feeling the itch for a new tank! The salinity is always high because of the evaporation in such a small tank. So um... anyone want to sell me complete setup so you can upgrade? Ahaha must resist... at least for a a little while lol
