Would you spend $400 for 50 extra gallons?

Honey, I told the guy for 65x25x30 but he made a mistake and made a 65x30x25. He gave me a $100 discount for that mistake. Are you ok with that? please be OK with that because I feel really bad for the guy having to toss this tank and I actually love that configuration!
I like your thinking on this but knowing my wife she would put my nuts in a jar and then make me send back the tank lol

I'd say too tall is when you find it a pain in the *** to do maintenance. Also take into consideration how tall your stand will be. You'll want your stand to keep your tank at eye level, so you don't have to hunch down. If your stand is 42" and your tank is 30" tall, you'll have to reach 72" high to get into the tank. And also, consider the lighting you'll use. You might have limited clearance from the lights depending on how high they hang (depending on your tank depth, you might have to hang them lower to increase PAR).

Also, you'll have to play your aquascape well. I've seen a lot of tanks with really low live rock and a ton of space on top. It makes it look disproportionate.

I think 24" is the ideal height. It's not too low, it's not too high, and it's not too huge of a pain for maintenance.

Lawrence you have access on both sides of your tank right? I am taller and I can't reach the back of my 4 x 2 x 2 without getting my armpits wet and putting extra pressure on my bracing... also a pain in the butt to get the coraline back there
how tall are you? you seems smaller
i was 5'10" but my scoliolis and old age makes me 1" shorter

Yes I can access and clean it both side without issues but I been using magnet to clean the glass more since the seeclear cleaner attachment works very well I just need a another super strong magnet to clean it.

Lawrence you also balance on top of foot stool like a nut! Accessing both sides of the tank is what makes it possible

I would definitely NOT go taller just for extra volume. Why do u need all that extra water?? In a nano tank people are always looking for ways to add extra water volume, but that is so their tanks can be more stable. When u have a 150+ gallon tank, what's an extra 50 gallons?? No much IMO. Stick with a shorter tank that is more manageable. (24" or shorter) or make the tank deeper (front to back dimension) u will hate your life with a 30" tall tank.

Also making your tank shorter with a taller stand looks pretty cool IMO. I have a 21" tall tank and a 43" tall stand. Its pretty legit when u don't have to bend over to look into my tank.

consider dumping extra money into a bigger sump maybe? might be cheaper way to add water volume. I'm going bigger than I wanted, just because this is the 4th tank upgrade in 3.5 years. 8x2x2

Tank upgrades get expensive. I lived in my house for 3.5 years, and I am on tank number 4. That's not counting the nano, octopus tank, or the frag tank. Lol

personal/professional opinion is never go over 24" tall, I am 6'3" and have a 24" tall on a 38" stand am just barely able to reach the bottom of the tank (front to about mid way) but cant reach the back. As far as depth no more than 30" with 24" being preferable. 30" and over get very expensive to light properly.

I have tons of customers with 30"+ tall tanks but don't have a customer who is happy with it. Except the one guy who has a 96x48x36 boomerang tank that someone else does all the maintenance...from inside the tank lol

Well I sat down with the boss tonight, (the wife), and played around with sketchup and right now it looks like the 65x25x30 is winning the race

Just looking at your sketch, you may want to keep your main drain at the bottom of the tank with just a bulkhead, that way you keep the detritus from building up in the bottom.

I thought the Herbie system calls for the main drain 6+" below surface?

I have it set up the way I described on my frag tank. Works great. Mag 9.5 w/ 1" drain.
