Hey all, finally got the approval to GO BIG. I'm looking to purchase a 4'2'2' peninsula (white stand with side overflow). Ideally rimless. I've got my eye on a Red Sea Reefer Peninsula 500, but I feel like they could drop in price any minute (given Red Sea's current sales for a number of their other tanks) so I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm not attached to Red Sea and would entertain completely custom. This tank will only be set up a maximum of two years, so I'm leaning towards Red Sea just because it seems easier to sell when I eventually move. Note: if I went Red Sea, I would not get their lighting kit.

I've looked at a custom quoted Planet Aquariums and Ellis Aquatics has offered to facilitate that sale, but a rimless is ~8 weeks turn around. Plus I'm balking a little at the massive undertaking to design the whole thing (overflow, plumping, sump etc.) I've learned a ton from my 22g cube/sump - but again a prebuild sounds like the easiest approach (even if Red Sea's sump is less-than-ideal.)

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Tank design isn’t too hard. Whoever is selling you the tank can easily help. Red Sea really never goes on sale. If anything I can see prices going up with transports, import fees,...

Good point, I can utilize the seller's expertise. Going custom doesn't seem like I'll save any money right? Factoring in the stand/sump it seems the price may be just about even.

IM's new peninsula is on sale, but it's a lagoonish style footprint. 47x30x16. 16 is pretty short, but the 30 deep would be pretty cool. looks like it won't ship until late july, though
Oh that's nice, I could MAYBE make it work with the wider dimensions. I see they've also got a white one too! Nice find, this complicates things.

What about a UNS rimless or waterbox clear series and you drill it yourself?
I'm happy with my waterbox, but I'd be concerned about the resale value by drilling it myself. Especially if I screw it up.

IM does have better stands. Red Sea stuff is pretty trash

Planning out the space a bit more and seeing if I can get another 6" for the IM dimensions - I can't do it, it'll stick out like a sore thumb along the wall/pillar I'm putting it against. Bummer. 48"24"24" is the really the most aesthetically doable.

A few people have PM'd me with possible Red Sea purchases through friends/FB marketplace. Thanks for the referrals all - keep 'em coming, I'm inquiring about each available! :D

Personally I like UNS tanks. Live there clarity and workmanship. Not sure if they make big tanks. I would go for it if they do.
mid it’s going to be a custom tank have them predrill the holes where you want it. I would risk the chance doing it myself.
Good luck!
Don’t forget to post some pictures with your tank later once it’s all set up.

Nice find! Definitely a good deal, especially if you include the equipment. Im not interested in taking on an established system, but maybe someone is.
Hello! From your original post you were looking for a setup that will potentially be changed after 2 years, hence the resale of Red Sea (which I totally agree with, Red Sea had a high resale value).

In my experience, when buying new you always take the biggest hit when reselling, versus buying a used setup. If the dimensions are right and quality equipment, I’d probably consider an established set up - plus if you’re starting new and then changing set ups after two years it probably wasn’t even mature that long!

I can’t speak to your requirements or this set up (however, it looks pretty clean and thought out) - just my 2 cents. With the brands you mentioned, I don’t think you’ll be unhappy either way. Happy reefing!

Thanks for the comments! I've found a seller in a near by city and have been communicating with them with plans to purchase in a few days (hopefully, crossing fingers it goes through!) It's a Redsea Peninsula 500 with a slightly modified sump and comes with a bunch of 'live' rock (been sitting fallow for 6 months.)

So I'm now prepping for moving day. Plan is to rent a 9' U-Haul van. I bought some glass suction cups and a bunch of moving blankets. My brother is going to help. Should be about 200lbs to lift. Seller says the tank has pipes comes out 1/4" on the overflow side so we can't lay it flat on the ground. I guess my plan is to bring some cardboard/blankets to rest the majority of the tank on and leave the 1/4" elevated. Also plan to bring 2 flat moving dollys. Also have tie downs to secure stuff.

Taking any advice!

The drains and returns won’t let you sit it level. Possibly purchase some 2x4 or 4x4 to sit it on.

Solid advice for the move, one time I had difficulty moving a large tank because it was plumbed with a closed loop (five SCH 80 bulkheads on the bottom). The plumbing didn’t allow for the bulkheads to be removed (reused) and eventually ended up getting some wood for it to sit on in the truck.

The suction cups are a good call, you’ll have very little grip on that tank. Good luck with the tank move.
