ONE word PHOSPHATES!!!

1. first clean as much as you can.

2. second is to get snails, large ones, about 1 per 10 gallons.

3. third invest in a phosphate reactor.

That should do it in about 2 weeks.

some phosphates are undetected! the rocks themselves have it in them, thats why it take some weeks before you completely remove it! some take longer than others, it depends on how much you have that is not detected, just keep changing the GFO in the reactor at least once a month!

But for immediate help, the snails will handle it almost right away, it will look like a lawnmower is cutting through it..... COOL!!!

thanks for the reply Jesse. you stated that the rocks may have some phosphates. how long does it take before its gone? the reason i ask is, my tank has been setup for over 2yrs. no new rock added since the 1st day of setup. any help would be great.

thanks,
john

sometimes its just the tank cycle that it goes through you just have to manage it but still do what jesse suggest. you can help by manually removing it if possible pluck it out. throw it away. how big is the tank?

It depends on how much phosphates are in the rocks, it could take up to a month or more! but you wont see it(algae) because the snails will keep eating it! So run a reactor for life of your tank, and it wont come back, but remember to change GFO at least once a month!

hello, the tank is 250gal total. i have had this hair for over a year. i got it to go away for about a month and it came back. i have turbos in there and they don't touch it. i tried sea hares, not happening. i have 4 tanggs and you guessed it they don't like it. maybe i will get a gfo reactor.

thanks,
john

Where do you get your top off water? What are the water parameters? Is it PH of 7 and what are the phosphates?
Be aware that I've seen people use the water outside of grocery stores for RO/DI water. Wouldnt do that! That water is usually just tap water with the chlorine removed. Lots of crap in it that algae loves.
