So I've had my yellow tang in my tank for quite some time and he gets along just fine with my powder brown and other fish. I purchased a purple tang and have had him in QT for the last 5 weeks going through copper and prazi. I knew it was going to be a 50/50 chance if they got along or not since I couldn't add them together.

Last night I trasfered the purple into the display but kept him in an aclimation box overnight and for the first half of the day so the other fish had a chance to investigate and get used to him. Now the yellow tang has chased the purple tang around for the last 2-3 hours. He just seems to be chasing him but not actually biting him.

When I added my powder brown awhile back the yellow gave him a hard time for awhile but soon after he left the brown alone. I'm just wondering how long should I give them a chance to settle things out before I have to start thinking about getting rid of one of them.

Don't listen to the tang police. I had 6 decent size tangs in a 180 and they were all fat and health. Yes 6, a sohal, purple, blue, yellow, sailfin, and clown tang. They all got transferred to the 300

A few short breaks. I let the purple out at about 2 pm, so he's only been in public for about 2 1/2 hours

Always release at night! Complete darkness. If I were you get the room as dark as possible. Cover the tank with something. If it's non stop chasing remove asap. If there are breaks purples (especially one you've qtd for 5 weeks) are strong fish. Give them like 3 4 days they'll get used to each other. Friendly tip next time you decide to add two fish of the same family though introduce a larger fish than the established fish that will most likely be aggressive towards the new comer. Good luck!

IME since the purple is larger, he should be ok. Probably get chased for a day or two. Till he realizes, I'm bigger than you. As long as purple is eating, I see no problem.

I had a purple, yellow, and a scopaz all in a 150 added at different times. There was a little chasing at first but they learned to live together and eventually became a pack.

I put him in at night in darkness into the acclimation box. Yea he was qt'd for 5 weeks, I'm gonna be bummed if this doesn't work out. I can send you a video and tell me what you think, I think I still have your number.

It would have been better to add another yellow or a sailfin that way the aggression is not focused on one fish.

Yea but I didn't want to be QT'ing multiple tangs in a small tank at the same time. Also, I think 3 tangs is as much as I want in a 120.

I had a trick for cichlids that worked pretty good. You swap out the mean fish to another tank (your QT) for a week or two. Then you put the "fish" (in your case the yellow tang) back in the display tank with the purple, the purple by then will be more settled and the yellow will be the new booty. Your mileage my vary.
