I had a trick for cichlids that worked pretty good. You swap out the mean fish to another tank (your QT) for a week or two. Then you put the "fish" (in your case the yellow tang) back in the display tank with the purple, the purple by then will be more settled and the yellow will be the new booty. Your mileage my vary.
I've thought about that but with my rock work it's so hard to catch them. Last time it took me almost a week to finally catch my yellow.

Only time Ive seen issues is when adding smaller tangs compared to the established group. They usually get f'ed up to the point that they're stuck at the top corner of the tank, begging to be taken out. I once tried adding 4-5 baby yellow tangs to an established tank, the alpha yellow wasn't having it. He kept them all in check, all the small yellows were corralled to one corner. I had to rehome the small tangs.

If adding a similiar size, it's a maybe just have to watch and see if the tang can fend for himself. If it gets chased here and there every now and then, but still swims around and eats it's usually ends up fine. Only if the fish gets harassed where they can't leave it's hiding spot, I would remove the fish.

If it's a larger tang, I just throw the fish in and don't worry about it.

That's just from my experience though. Always watch the fishes behavior

I have 16.... Yes 16 tangs in my 578 gal. 8 powder blue, 3 large Achille, 1 xlarge Dussumeri tang, 2 Bariene tangs, chocolate tang, and orange shoulder tang. The smaller ones are in first and bigger ones last. They all seem to get along just fine. There are some short chases for a few seconds but nothing bad. All were introduced over a 4 weeks period.

8 powders?!?! Post some pics
+1000 Love to see 8 powders

Yea but I didn't want to be QT'ing multiple tangs in a small tank at the same time. Also, I think 3 tangs is as much as I want in a 120.
I have powder blue, convict and yellow in a 60 qt for over a month and they still fight but all eat like pigs

Haha I actually started with 10 but 2 died in QT. It's hard to get a group picture of them. They typically swim in group of 2-3. Very seldom seen them all together. I've seen those pics online of huge group of powder blue in the wild so I thought I give it a shot. It's something different than say a group of yellow tangs:)
You can see 4 of them here

This is what I did. Yellow was in tank. Got purple put yellow into sump. And purple into qt. When time for purple to come out I put him into display. Then two weeks later put yellow into acclimation box in display. Then released. A little attention, bit not much. Yellow was bigger

Well catching the yellow is pretty much out of the question, otherwise I would just put him in the sump for a bit. I shut the lights off super early tonight in hopes to give the purple a break through the night. They seem to have gone to bed for the night but I guess I'll see in the morning.

That's about what happened. 3 days of almost non stop chasing and I couldn't catch either one because of my rock work. Got home from work today and the purples fins were all beat up and he basically asked me to net him. I put him in the sump but now I have to get the yellow out.

Wow guess i should consider myself lucky. My kole tang was alone in my 93 for about 6 months and now that ive started adding more fish he normally beats on them for a couple hours then they are fine. The worst was last weekend when i got my sailfin

That was after about an hour and a half

After that they were fine and everyone gets along

Hope youre able to catch the yellow

The purple is in the sump now. It just bums me out because I've wanted a purple for so long but the yellow has been in my tank for 2 years now, even made it through the tank transfer

I shouldn't have a problem catching the yellow now that the purple is out. Last time I caught him I just put food in the trap but the last few days he has been too busy chasing the purple.
