My old melanarus used to eat them which is why I maybe never had a "problem". So i'd suspect my wrasses will take care of it. Besides, everyone says that harlequins eradicate asterina populations in no time. So the downside so far is I get to buy a sweet looking shrimp to handle stars that eat corals idgaf about.

you joined the masses my friend and that way of thinking is not responsible our ocean's should come first ! not the problems in your tank from wanting a pest starfish!

None of my wrasses have ever eaten them... I'll flick them off the glass and they may go towards the star floating down but I've never seen any eat them. Maybe you just had a glutenous melanurus.

Someone call the PETA Shrimp division! LOL

um the down side is you have a obligated feeder and when the star fish are done and all eaten ( which is only their feet of the starfish where then the living creature starves then rots in your tank) what are u going to do feed it chocolate chip star fish its not like its going to eat something else or survive and its defiantly not a comic book or a baseball card so trading it back in just like when purchased will add stress and over time shorten the life span considerably you should be a responsible reefer and put animals in your tank not to solve problems but to have a beautiful addition to your biotope and enjoy for the life of the Aquarium
So to recap, downside is I have some stars in my tank that have never been a problem in my tanks but if they do I get to buy a cool shrimp that will eat them. Then, once they're gone I get to choose between buying another live animal to feed it or rehome it recouping some of my initial investment. In addition, this somehow makes me a di**.

Only the last part seems bad but I can live with other peoples' judgement because I feel of others' opinions the way I feel about zoas...

And let's cut the sh**. Responsible reefing means buying only tank bred and maricultured livestock. There is more responsible and less responsible reefing for sure but frankly we're buying animals taken from their natural habitats to stick in a glass/acrylic box. These animals have a high mortality and the morbidity involved in being caught, shipped, minorly poisoned with chemicals, and fed unnatural foods far outweighs any type of "responsible" action by anyone. Furthermore if they die we just buy another...

mariculture is not being responsible they end up dying in your tank in a few month how is that responsible aqua culture that is responsible and just because other are not responsible does not diminish your action of being a responsible reefer excuses are like Schnitzels every one has them whether they are in your butt or mouth that is your choice hahahah;)

I'll never compare to your knowledge of this hobby but one thing I know better than you is my own reefs. I've always had asterinas, and they've never been a problem in my tanks. Honestly the "problems" they cause posed here are really pretty benign IMO. I'm underwhelmed by the Chicken Little action going on in this thread.

never say never there is a first time for everything just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it wont, lets say you been going to see some hookers now for a few yrs and haven't worn a jimmy just because you haven't got a std from doing this doesn't mean in the future you will not

I'm in but I'll never win...I want the growler to just be for participating and naming rights. I'm actually down...I could definitely use the $100 to the store...considering your prices I'd end up with quite a bit.

You're the sponsor...start a thread in your forum with the rules. In a way it's impossible for this to be fair because some will start with more than others. Sounds like some could win already. Because of this I think you should just give me the $100. That way I can buy a harlequin and some choc chip stars to keep it alive while my asterinas start to populate the tank. Don't worry I'll be responsible and drip acclimate.
