I am completely new to the hobby and just started adding livestock to my 50 gallon cube. I just bought this powerhead and controller but it seems to a bit of an overkill for my system (i have seen my same tank run corals fine with just the return pump). I have it on the lowest setting and it seems to push the fish into hiding into the back corner of the tank and blows a lot of sand around. Pictures to follow

if you're having an issue with the pump being "too strong", try setting to W1, S3, and dial the knob all the way left.

it's not clearly documented in the "instructions", but W1 is the only mode where the pump actually stops between pulses, and is noticeably more mellow.

Just like how my dogs like sticking their heads out the window. Fish love riding the waves. The sea has natural currents . so its pretty normal. I plan on have 2 wp25 in my 36x36. Probably not enough so I have wp40 on stand by. I also like to I crease return pump rate for extra folw versus going with a bigger wave maker.

Ok thanks. I just wish it didn't push all of the fish into the corner, they hide behind the overflow when it's on.

Yes, tested often. They cycle took about 3 1/2 weeks. So far I have added 2 cardinal fish, 1 mandarin goby, 2 turbo snails, 5 nassarius snails and 4 hermit crabs.
It's a little early for a mandarin... you usually want a tank at least 6 months or older since their main food source comes from pods in the tank.

As far as the powerhead it should be fine in your tank. I have the same one in my 40 and I have it set to W1 S3 dial set in the middle setting.

yeah, the goby is gonna be pretty tough. how big is it? does it eat prepared food?

if it's relying on pods, it's not going to do well in your tank - unless you're dropping big money and buying pods.. >_<

I realize it's a bit early for the mandarin, kinda an impulse buy. I did add a bottle of pods though.

I would return the mandarin, it's very unlikely to survive. 50g I way too small to produce enlighten pods to keep it healthy. Experienced reefers wouldn't generally add one for atleast a year to build up the pod pop, (from your friendly fish advocate) haha
