Hey Everyone!

As the title states, I’m looking for a Gem Tang and Whitetail Bristletooth Tang (preferably on the smaller side). Does anybody have any wholesaler connections?

I’m located in South OC but willing to drive.

Thanks in advance!

I feel like I consistently see white tails at Tong's in FV. I've seen him bring in large groups of Gems too. Had to of had near 10k in gems one time I was in there. I believe the white tails are usually in the 150 range and the Gems 500-600 when I see them there. White tails have been tricky for me for some reason, look close at their mouth when you do find one.

Yup, I've seen them at Tongs from time to time. Hoping to find someone that has a wholesale connection (at least for the Gem) since their retail mark-up makes them quite pricey (heck, their wholesale price is still pretty pricey for a fish).

I would still reach out to Adam at Ocean Devotion, he can source you non QT'd fish for a great price as well. He's my only source for fish and he really pays attention to the details. Great guy!

What would you charge for a fully QT'd fish? I'm just asking, because Marine Collectors charges about the same. Minimum QT time is about 3-4 weeks, if not more. I think when you figure in the time, cost of everything involved, it's pretty reasonable when everything is factored in. But, if you have the time and room to QT everything yourself, then it's just a matter of sourcing a healthy fish. It may seem crazy, but when you get a healthy parasite/illness free fish and you put it in your display with your other fish, it's kinda worth it to me. Especially when you already have hundreds, if not more, invested in fish and livestock in your display. But that's just me.

honestly, i don't know. i was just surprised to see how much the fish were going for.

if that gives the buyer more peace of mind then they should buy the qt'd fish.

i'm also the guy that asks ppl "how are you sure what your buying is really organic..."

that's just me though.

Yeah, it’s a matter of trust probably? Knowing Adam and having bought several fish from him, he’s a stand up guy and someone I can trust. Having been in this hobby for a long time, you can pick out the bad ones in a heartbeat. There’s a million ways to reef, so we must choose what works for us and I totally get the sticker shock, but you’re paying for a service and peace of mind. I’m just glad we have options and I take comfort in that. Cheers!

Considering how much work it can be to make sure fish are parasite free, and also absorbing the costs of lost fish (obtaining not-so-healthy fish from the wholesaler and not being able to bring it back to health), I think most places are reasonably priced. If you can find a place that you can trust, and/or QT yourself, I would never add a non-QT'd fish in my system (LFS fish are so dirty with either flukes, ich, internal parasites, etc.).

I think the niche that are the most profitable are the "rare" or "hard-to-QT" pre-quarantined fish since nobody wants to QT a fish themselves and lose it.

That seems rather cheap for a fully QT'd white-tail. I would ask what their protocols are before buying. What some people call QT isn't QT at all.

any kole type tang I've noticed can get damage to the lips pretty easily. I'm not sure if they are prone to infection there or what but If it looks rubbed or irritated in anyway I'll pass. All tangs, if I notice their teeth I'll pass, usually something is off with the mouth (last happened to me with a scopas) I've had a few basically seem to have their lips erode/peel back and go off food and eventually starve.

good to know, thanks for the reply and heads up. I just got one and day two I noticed some mouth damage that I think was from the netting… very fast swimmers, so I will keep an eye on it but looked fine when I picked it up so hopefully heals
