So today, I decided to go coral shopping since my tank was finally stable. So I drove one hour to one of our sponsor LFS'. After being greeted and after browsing for about ten minutes, the owner asks me what I'm looking for. So I tell him "aquacultured sps, stuff known to thrive," my kind of stuff. I ask if he has any of his "named pieces" at the store and says he doesn't keep it here. So I asked if they were at another store, and he says no. He then informs me they're in the back, but that he doesn't sell his pieces to just anyone. He added he only had pieces $250 and up in the back. After realizing where this conversation was heading, I politely nodded and stood silent, continuing to look at the frag tank. He then asked me what I was looking for and asked for me to name some of his pieces. I responded with, "I'm just looking for something that looks nice." I refused to name drop because the pieces at the top of my head weren't ones I was looking for. After my response, he asked for names again and I refused to give any. After that, I just left. Some people might say I should have been more persistent if I wanted to see his stuff, but let me tell you, I will never beg to anyone to take my money. If you want my business, then don't treat me like a second class citizen and earn it.

I really dislike the fact that I have to show some people the contents of my wallet to be taken seriously. I understand that the high end game isn't for everyone, but you tend to lose a few customers with that kind of approach. I shouldn't have to prove myself of anything to see anyone's "exclusive" stash. And I know a lot of people are going to say that there are too many people who ask to see expensive stuff and then don't buy any, and I agree. But you're taking a big chance by refusing service to potential customers like that. And most importantly, if you're into the business of selling corals (or selling anything), why would you hide them in a back room inaccessible for other customers to see?

There's a big reason that I don't advertise where I'm from (SCR) or who I am (I'm nobody) or what I do for a living. I want to see how owners generally treat customers without knowing who they are. If you treat me well, then I'll be a customer for life. If you give me bad customer service, then I'll take my money elsewhere. In this case, that's what I did.

I don't really care to expose this sponsor because I don't care enough to deal with drama or flame wars. I guess I'm a little bitter about wasting half a tank of gas for nothing, though.

Haha. We don't need pitch forks. But this is the type of stuff that's happened to me throughout the hobby in LFS'. People trying to rate me with dollar signs. It's a practice I find very superficial.

pricing in this hobby seems to fluctuate based upon what you wear, what you drive, and what you know.

when something gets a name, somehow the piece gains like 1000% markup.

i'm "lucky" in that the people i visit already know i'm a cheap-***.. :p

I've joked about making a necklace out of this, but this time, I think I might wear this around my neck to gain FSM baller status around fish stores. Then people will know I mean business!

I love this post. Just like I always say in other post having to do with LFS or any type of business. Customer satisfaction. Is key to success. And every one is a potential customer. You don't have to buy something to be a customer. Foot traffic alone helps your business. I use to see so many threads or comments about how not enough people support LFS yet they're all on here selling and buying. I myself hate going to LFS stores only because they instantly label you as soon as you walk in. I don't feel the need to put my Gucci watch on for a LFS but if its going to get me salt water I will. Lol. But many times I've walked in to many stores. Either no acknowledgement or I'd leave before ever being helped. The owner at reef tropical fish is the nicest guy I've ever met. They don't specialize in reef but they have a full row if coral/fish/SalT water. Also Matt at coral collection never gave a d@mn if you're just coming for something small.

sorry to hear about your bad experience with one of our sponsors but here @ A Chance of coral I dress like a bum and my prices are cheap just to show you guys im not about material things!!! Again sorry for your bad experience. but we are all human and we make mistakes and its hard not to judge sometimes . Im glad I don't have a issue with that and I do my best to treat every customer with respect because its the right thing to do and want my place of business to be a chill place where you can browse with out some one hanging over your shoulder asking you do need something what are you looking for every 5 seconds. shoot I usually have drinks and or beer in the fridge and im always willing to share

That's why we are so lucky to be in SOCAL. There are so many great stores that have excellent customer service. Others are terrible. And one portrays themselves so terribly online that I refuse to even go in that store and check it out.

We really are fortunate. You can throw a stone and hit 5 LFS. Find the one or two that work for you and build relationships with them.

With today's hype on coral naming this doesn't surprise me anymore. It was only a matter of time before it evolved into coral snobs and a suedo-cast system

naturally what follows are sellers who attempt to market themselves on the basis of "exclusivity" and "ultra quality". Normally this is not a problem (as long as there a suckers out there willing to buy into it) except, more often than not, these attributes become convenient replacements for competitive pricing and good ole-fashioned customer service.

We too are not imune to this. I chuckle inside whenever someone attempts to judge the quality of our show based soley on a body count.
As they say, Ignorance is bliss I suppose
