That amount of corrosion on the magnet is probably a good indicator that it was under some serious exposure to moisture and don't think ambient moisture would've been enough to do that kind've damage. Most likely there was a fissure in the casing or a bad seam and finally warped the crap out of itself after drying out.
cheap magnets swell it is what it is, just think of impeller magnets that dont see air that swell while running and get stuck.Only magnets that have proven themselves to me are the tunze and koralia magnets. Another magnet to watch out for are the algae cleaners such as magfloatsm ive seen a few of those swell up as well. i dont even keep them in my tank. i use when need then remove them.

The thing is, I have talked to a few "experts" in the industry that swear this wouldn't have caused a problem. Iron is an essential element in a reef... yadda yadda... I guess we'll never know for sure, but my feeling is, it can't be good!
Yeah so is calcium but I'm sure those "experts" aren't willing to dump a bottle of 2 part in their tank and think of it harmless. Also, magnets have other metals in it aside from iron.
