My Tank Build

I've been getting a tone of pm's asking how did I get rid of AEFWs. First this is not the safest thing to do I did loose a hand full of fish, all snails, crabs, and shrimp. But some how I got kill AEFWs and its nothing I did on purpose. Most part cause I'm not one that watches my tank daily and notice little changes. I only big things really. Also I don't test weekly or even monthly.
So last September I lost 2 small fish. A male mandarin and diamond gody. Then started noticing empty snail shells. At first I thought it was sick fish and my CBB eating the snails. But I have yet seen him pick at snail to this date even when there dying. Then in October I lost a few more fish. Some chromisus and clown. Then noticed where the f*** are all my shrimp and crabs. Even know I haven't seen pods in my tank or sump in a while.
Then in November I started loosing corals but not like crazy. They would recede like an 8th of an inch a day.

To b continued later today

So when my stags started to recede I started to wonder what was going on. So I started testing parameters and checking for stray voltage. Couldn't find anything wrong with anything even check all my magnets for rust couldn't find any rust. After about two weeks and I started losing my GC blue stag. I said F it and took out both of my gyres and took the plastic covers off the magnets. I found a small rust spot on the Prototype gyre

Coralvue replaced the mags and I did a lot of water changes along with a few polypads. With in a few weeks of taking out that magnet the tank started looking great again. And that's when I started noticing no more bite marks on my SPS. I was even talking to other guys that I talk to regularly and telling him how I wasn't noticing any more bite marks and it was pretty crazy.
I think the slow poisoning of the magnet killed off the Aefws overtime which caused them to die off and not reproduce

Funny how things sometimes work out like that. Were your poly filters the color indicating type & if so, did anything ever register with them?

...and if the magnets are not rusting how much is it going to cost to replace them? Perhaps taking them out for a bit and if the corals do better then you know that they are part of the issue.

The issue with magnets and rust always confuses me. Why isn't gfo a problem. I assume other toxic metals release with the corrosion?

Saltwater seems to be so darn corrosive. So should we date when a magnet, like gyre pump , is added and guesstimate how long we have till it eventually rusts.

Also fascinating finding with the aefw.

dont know exactly what type of metals gfo is made of. but magnets have all sort of metals.

I thought paying an arm and a leg for major name brands like maxspect vs saving some money on jebao was supposed to eliminate these issues... peace of mind for overpaying over a brand, guess not huh? At least they replaced the part, too bad they don't replace the fish and corals lost. On the flip side in your case kinda worth it considering you got rid of those pests.

Well I for one am NOT throwing out my gyre because of one persons experience with their prototype. Sucks it happened but it was a prototype and this so far seems like an isolated incident.

The mags can still b used after cut open. It's a plastic cover. Just super glue the cover back on.

Just look for the number of threads on TLF magnets that corroded and led to coral death, there are many.

Companies buy cheap magnets in bulk, it isnt the rusting iron but the other metals released when the magnet rusts.

Anyhow, the good news is your aefw are gone!
