Hello all.

My name is Mike, I live in the San Fernando Valley area.

I have kept freshwater fish and planted tanks for 20+ years. I am just now finally getting into the beautiful world of reef tanks.

My first plan is to set up a 30g tank. I am planning on purchasing the JBJ 30RL for this. My current equipment list of items already purchased are:

1)24" AquaticLife T5 HO and Lunar Light Fixture
2) Current 1/15 hp chiller
3) AquaMaxx HOB-1

I was able to attend the event at Marine Depot last Friday night. Was pretty neat and found the presentation by Red Sea to be very informational. I am anxiously looking forward to setting up my first reef tank and also meeting you guys here online!

MD has a book for DoD today. Would this be a good purchase for a beginner? "Book Of Coral Propagation Vol. 1"

Thank you,

Mike

Thank you. How are the items I've purchased so far? Sufficient for that tank?

Looks good mike. Welcome to the best site in Southern California.

That skimmer should be perfect for your setup. Aquamaxx makes great products. Good luck and get up some pics when you get going...

That book is basically about cutting up corals for selling, trading or just paying it forward, not necessarily about how to keep them successfully, just wanted to make sure that it is what you want.

Dang, I had ordered before I read your post. I just sent MD an email to see if I can cancel. I was looking for a good book to learn about corals.

If you want to learn about corals, a great book to read is

Aquarium corals: selection, husbandry, and natural history by eric borneman.

It has a huge amount of information.
Its like $50 new, but ifound it on ebay for $15, you probably can too.

How large was your fresh water? If I was gonna do a small tank I'd definitely do a cube.

I over heard you talking to a dude at the meet. Welcome and ask a lot of questions and make local friends so you can help each other out with common issues that come up.

I always said the Vortechs are not worth the money and that my Koralia worked just as good.....

Boy was I wrong! They are worth every penny and then some. Buy the MP10, you will not regret it.

I just lost out on one yesterday on Ebay, gently used MP10 wireless. I will save for the vortech, they are cool looking anyway. I still have couple months before I will 'need' it.

+1 I like my vortech. It really helps prevent detritus from building up.

Just know when u buy it, that it will be a little noisy. I have a Tunze that is silent, but it's pretty bulky inside the tank. So there are pros and cons to each one. In a nano tank, I would def stick with a mp10, gives u alot more room in the tank.
