Just my preference...but I would ditch the hose and barb, especially the check valve on the ball. I look very similar to the one they sell at HD. It's not reef safe . The spring inside will rust and and cause major issue. Back to the plumbing, I would use a "wye" to split the return with the ball as is. Not sure what pump you got right there and the height of the top, you be loosing major head lose. I would ditch the bottom return, (maybe use it as a WC drain).

i was thinking of just running the top return and using the bottom return with the ball valve for water changes?

Going to end up using the bottom return for water changes it has a screen on the inlet so fish won't go in and has a ball valve and cap at the end the cap isn't glued on just hand right it's going to be in my return section, also the return and down pipe have ball valves thanks for all the suggestions

I also agree with this. Not only are they not reef safe, but they WILL fail on you. Not if, but when. Set up your return high up in the water comin to reduce syphoning if there is a loss of power. Also like said about; head weight might be an issue.

Any way u can add a second drain to your overflow? You can run a herbie setup. You will love it! If you set it up correctly, zero bubbles in your sump, and the drains will be literally silent. I have a 3000+gph pump running through my tank and you can't hear the overflow one bit.

If that overflow box is acrylic, it would be very easy to cut a hole with a hole saw, and add a second bulkhead.

Something to think about.

I like the idea of an easy water change drain but for a water change you'd be best served by removing water from the top of the tank than from the bottom. Surface skimming is best because thats where dissolved organic compounds like to hang. Just an opinion since it looks like you're already setup to do it from the bottom. Hard to undrill a hole, lol.

the area in between the teeth on the overflow box is bigger than normal so i dont think ill get any organics on the surface
