Stain looks like shet. I didn't pay the guy in full. Thinking about having another guy re stain the tank. Super bummed about it though :/
Awww man, that sucks. Just do what you gotta do to fix it and get it the way you want it. It's a nice stand either way.

even a well done stain job will be kinda crappy under actinic lights. it's like looking at something under black light, all the tiny fuzz and imperfections show up.

is the other tank going to be broken down? or will it always be lite by the other tank?

how's the stain look without the other tank's lights on?

No that's my 180, Its gunna be broken down as soon as I get the other tank up and running. Now that the sun is out, it looks horrible. The guy didn't even use the color stain I wanted. It looks like a black/walnut stain, I specially told him espresso. oh well. He's really good with wood, but sucks at staining.

Is it a poor stain job or does it just not match the way you'd like it to. Those are different issues. From the pics it looks good but honestly staining wood is a serious art/skill. I've built nice furniture that I've then ruined staining...

Honestly I would be happy if it just didn't match, but the stain looks horrible. It's super patchy, and there's runs from the top coat. I wish I had just left it bare wood. I guarantee u I could have stained it nicer....now I have to sand it all down and redo it. Debating whether I should do it myself or pay someone. Anyone good at staining?

Gel stain is pretty easy to put on and have it look good. It's fast and within 2 coats you'd be done. A real stain job will set you back at least a week not to mention the actual work.

that really sucks.

I haven't stained my own stand yet because it's such a PITA. it requires a lot of patience.

did your guy use a polyurethane stain+sealer in one? i personally really DISLIKE those. you either have to do several coats really thin, or a few thicker coats but with heavy sanding between. both ways are super labor intensive (and very time consuming).

personally, i use the water based stain, brush and wipe, let dry (quite fast if it's water based stain), recoat - once i get the stain to the color i want, then i go over it with 2-3 coats of thin poly and sand with progressively finer grit (start with 200 -> 400 -> 800).

sanding it down and re-staining shouldn't be too bad, but sealing it will be a pain since you won't be able to brush it on on a flat surface, which means you'll either get runs, or you have to apply some SUPER THIN coats, which means A LOT of coats.. :(
