Sponge help ASAP!

My dam wiener kids took the new sponge out of the bag to put it in the tank... It's an orange fan sponge, but I heard if they touch air they die. Is this true, is the new guy dead already, anything I can do to help? how long with it take to see change if it's dying... or dead.

I wanna say at least 7-10 seconds. sounds like nothing, but count it out. it is a long time...

Was it still dripping water pretty good? If yes, I would swish it around under water to remove any air pockets the best you can and cross your fingers. I don't think your kind likes a lot of light, so put under an overhang or something. Good luck.
