I have two frags of sunset monti from two different people. The first one instantly bleached and was almost dead. I left it towards the top of my tank and it never really came back. After about 2-3 weeks i moved it to the sand bed and its already starting to come back. The second peice was doing OK but not great on the bottom and when i moved it about half way up it bleached for the day before i moved it back down and is now coming back. Im not sure if that was just due from the move for that one but i didnt wanna risk it.

So... For those of you that have delt with these guys what have you found on the lighting needs? I was told montis LOVE light and more the better to a certain degree of course.

I have 2x250w 14ks on a 22" tall 80 gal tank...:conf44:

I always start new sps in the bottom of my tank, leave them there a few days, then (if they are going to be mounted higher, try and place them temporarily a little higher for a few more days (longer than when it was low), then if it likes it move it higher.

Generally I found that most montis can stand pretty bright halide lighting if acclimated slowly to it. Lots of random flow helps too.

Can't really help you here since I use a different lightning set up and my tank is 29" high. But I have my sunset monti 5-7" away from the 6x39w T5's and it's doing great. When I was introduced them to my tank, I started them in the middle of the tank and half of it bleached out and they started coming back when I moved them to the top.

With metal halides, sometimes the lighting might be too intense for the coral. Maybe try and take it out of direct light if its bleaching out.

I have one in my tank and I've had it for 4 weeks now and its doing just fine. When I first got it, I actually placed it at the top of my tank running on 36 inch x6 and it was great. I just moved a few corals around and its in my sand bed now and is doing just fine. What are your water parameters? Calcium, Mag, Alk?

i have similar lighting and similar height. what i found interesting is start from the bottom for at least a week, and then leave it there. i actually have a frag in the shade and the color is better then the one in the open light. doesnt grow as fast but color is crazy you check to see you have nudis? but from what i see is they dont like to be moved that much

ok I will add my 2 cents. I have several frags of Sunset Monti and superman. I have a few under a 400 w radium and I have some under t-5's. I see some color differences but I do know with the mh they donr like being dire4ctly under the focal point of the light. now with the t-5's I have then with in 18" of water and the t-5's are about 8" above the water.

so to answer your question it could be your 14 k lighting. The radium bulbs are usually 20K and it I remember correctly the bluer the light the more power you need to push the light deeper depths.

So 10k 250 watt will penetrate deeper then a 20k 250 watt. well that is what I go by.

my 400 watt radium light is about 30" above the water surface. The corals are 20" below the service.

I hope this helps
