Hey all,
Swayd here.

So I have finally had some success with SPS frags and I am loving it. growth and coloration from brown to amazing and .5" frags to 3-4" minis. Zoas have been growing well and are all over each other so they have become hard to frag. LPS have been up and down mostly due to having higher flow in the tank. I have created a small shelter for them to have less flow but its difficult to keep that area clean. Yes I have a tang and yes he is small and will outgrow my reef but I hope to grow with him and upgrade this summer when I get a downstairs apartment!
I am currently having issues with bubble algae and very recently a small patch of Cyano. I started doing 2 WCs a week and I have finely tuned my skimmer. I have also recently, FINALLY, added filter socks so I have a better filtration system. I used to run absolutely no filtration and procrastinated WCs, therefore I ran into this darned algae problem. I also recently sucked all of the Detritus out of the sump and display so I am about 95% detritus free in my sump and DT.
I plan to keep this tank up until about may and have a 80G DT and 25G sump setup and ready to transfer only coral and fish. I dont want to transfer any LR because I want to keep the bubble algae at bay as much as possible. I have been looking into a new skimmer and possibly a couple reactors for BioPellets and GFO/carbon for added filtration.
All feed back is appreciated and I am always open to new ideas!

Congrats on the success so far! You can try emerald crabs to get rid of the bubble algae. Try adding flow to those zones where cyano is building up. Worse case you can use chemiclean

Hello Swayd, Welcome to the forum. People love pictures here. for your new system I would transfer the rocks as well depending on where you got them from. if you started with dry rock it could be leaching phosphates and might run into that problem if you go that same route. otherwise I think its added value in bacteria. anyway feel free to ask any questions, some people here really know their stuff

Thanks guys. I am contemplating adding more emeralds but I have been picking out as much bubble algae as possible by hand. When I do upgrade I will transfer as much bacteria as possible I'm just trying to keep the algae out.

Bad news!
Since I've started skimming my tank has been looking so clean. But my acros started to brown and one bleached all the way. Did I shock them by cleaning up the tank too fast? I haven't ran my skimmer like this for a while and it's pulling some really nasty stuff. I've also been doing more water changes with a larger water volume change as well. Did I mess up in try to bulk up my maintenance routine?

SPS brownout is usually attributed to higher phosphate/nutrient levels and/or poor lighting.
Increasing your maintenance would usually reduce the levels, so you might have stirred up some dirt or if you reaquascaped recently, it might account for the acros poor health.

Two possible solutions are as follows:
Try moving the acros to the area in your tank with the most PAR (basically center of the lighting and higher up towards the surface.
Do a few quick water changes to reduce the po4 levels in the tank to acceptable levels.

Sorry I did not update.
What had happened was, when I did a water change I accidentally lowered the salinity to 1.021 from 1.025! I brought it back up over the course of several days and things are looking better. I did lose a couple SPS though.

Oh man, glad you caught that in time. Good call going slow back to your original salinity. It's all too common for folks to swing back in the opposite direction and kill already stressed livestock.

Yeah, I messed up. Once I realized it a day later I stopped my ATO and let it evaporate back to regular salinity slowly. Hopefully my acros color up nice again.

On another note, I noticed that the bubble algae is beginning to die off. I have been very good about feeding the tank and keeping it clean. I have also been using my own RO/DI water since I got my RO/DI machine on Christmas lol. But, the bryopsis has been growing and I have had trouble controlling it.

I've been battling bubble algae and bryopsis. I have finally made a plan of action which will include maintaining stable parameters and making sure I maintain a low nutrient system. I will also be dosing H202, 1ml per every 10 gallons for 7-10 days. I will document by taking pictures and updating this thread as I get the chance. I appreciate ALL advice and information about dosing H202.

Day 3 of dosing H2o2
Noticed that bubble algae is starting to deflate but bryopsis does not seem affected.
