Yep that's the stuff I was talking about. Super porous little rocks. They'd replace the ceramic rings in your canister filter. I used a small amount in a nano reef tank while battling nitrates and it worked well. Sponges in your canister are similar to running a sock in a sump, they catch debris but you need to remove them before they break down. Some people prefer them and are willing to clean them regularly. I know I get busy and lazy so I choose to leave them out of my system and rely on water changes and a good skimmer.
I think you'd be fine to gravel vac that front section of cyano of the sand bed. Or use a fish net to remove it. Just the top layer won't hurt anything.
Smite,
Update. I did happen to find the de-nitrate at lsf while I was getting salt. They only had lil packets of it for like $5. It was good for 10 gallons. They only had 1 pack but jeeze that must be price stuff! Lfs didn't trust it but of course, I've had conflicting views on just about everything.
I cleaned out my canister filter leaving half the foam (it was just put in there last week) I only left 1 bag of new carbon (tanks clear!) I also left my biomax cubes.
I cleaned up the front sand a bit and the next day I found all these lil things!
I can't figure out what they are. They appear to be more like an algea than a worm. I asked gumbii and he suggested hydroids but said it could be anything.
When I looked them up, the pics didn't look like what I have exactly but it did say they like brine shrimp. I started feeding with lil brine last week....
All in all, I did a 25 gal change yesterday along with sucking up 90% of blue green and red cyano. I also bought 2 nice pieces of rock from lfs I put in with new water. Nem finally moved!
I was starting to wonder. I no normally you don't want that to happen but, in my situation, I have nothing he can hurt except himself from moving around. I bought him last week and he hasn't moved. I was worried.
I have done some small sugar dosing to help my nitrate. As of this morning my no3 is down from 80 ppm to about 50 or 60.
Everything going good
