I don't think 50 post and 30 days are unreasonable. The mentality that this is a local forum where ppl can buy and sell only makes SCR a Reef craigslist. We should have a mentality that this is a great place for locals to come together and learn, meet up, mess with each other and sell. Instead its simply sell sell sell.

The best part of any of these forums is learning and sharing. Buying and selling may be fun but it is the exchange of ideas that makes reefing exciting. Seeing other people's results and learning from their methods is really meaningful. Discussions like dealing with nutrients, eg. ATS, refugium, skimmer, water changes, carbon dosing, nitrate dosing, etc all help expand our own tank management

but don't ever limit how many FS threads per person. :a24: lol

Seems like all I do is sell stuff. I see the threads with questions and can sometimes answer with my opinion but 10 others have beat me to it already and I'm just not one to say my opinion if others have already answered. I love you all.

Thank you all for your input. After putting much thought into this, we will give this a trial run. A requirement of 50 meaningful posts and being an active member for 3 months before you can view threads in the marketplace. Supporters will be able to bypass these rules.

I also think limit monthly live stock FS threads to 2 a month. Would discourage the underground retailers and wannabe FSMs. And those that continue would be easier to call out because they'll make epic FS posts since they'll only have so many opportunities to do it

I think putting up more regulations on who can sell here is going to change the dynamic of the forum in a positive way. Sales are fine and dandy, but dialogue about the hobby really should be what the bulk of what threads should be about. We'll see what the real impact is with the trial run, but I'm hopeful that it'll improve things around here :)

I think I love this new rule the forum is trying.

I know I love the restrictions on selling in the market place for those who haven't contributed with helpful post or questions about the hobby. 3 months seems very fair as well.

The part I'm not sold on is blocking newbies from the marketplace completely. < If i'm understanding this correctly.

Just because a individual is new to the SCR community does not mean they are new to the hobby. So why lock them out of trading with fellow reefers on the forums, or giving away things they no longer need? I'm not going to lie, the initial attraction to this forum for me was the marketplace. I found second hand equipment for a price I could afford. That led me to bettering my system, which got me better results and more "into" the hobby. I also had the pleasure of meeting some of the SCR community, most of which were great people who gave me solid advice. Most of the tanks were much more impressive and colorful than mine. So I got the bug, hopped on the forums and started asking questions and reading up on past topics to try and get the same results.

I don't see how letting new comers buy can hurt the forums. If all they want to do is buy, who does it really hurt? Its the ones that just come here to sell, flip and pick up free crap that drive some of us nuts. And if youre one of the people bothered by this, just don't give your free items to someone with a 10 post count that consist of "pm sent" or "ill take it".

I completely agree with all this. Is it not possible to just prohibit posting a sale thread in the marketplace but still be able to view it? EyeReef ?
