On Friday the 15 of August I received a prototype of the maxspect riptide from coralvue.

It does like like the image above but black (sorry do to the NDA letter I signed I can not post picture or video of the unit unless it get approval from coralvue). The prototype is the same size as the small dual bar model

The water that this little pump push is crazy. I would say it can push as much water if not a little more them one ecotech mp60. Also with the pump being so slender you can put it right at the water line and it won't be an eye sore like a vortech can be. Sense the pump draws water in from under, like so

You can put the pump right under the water line (I mean right under) and not get any micro bubbles. But will give the tank great surface agitation to help oxygenate the water. For any of u old time reefers, remember the old school dump surge systems? The riptide provides the same effect as that with out the micro bubbles. I do think every peninsula tank would benefit by having a riptide pump in it.
The only down side of the prototype is the controller. The controller for the prototype is as basic as u can get. Only has 3 functions, constant, pulse, and feed. The constant is just straight on. You can control the speed of the pump in this function from 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. The pulse mode is a on and off type deal. Turns on for a set time then off for a set time. You also have the ability to control the speed in pulse mode. I have not yet tried the feed mode. I will try it tomorrow I have the day off.

I highly recommend anyone interested in getting a riptide for there tank come out to Yucaipa and see this one in action. Just PM me to set up a time and day.

Thanks for the info! I was curious how close to the waterline you could get. I was thinking of getting one of these for my peninsula style tank and put it on the opposite side of the overflow to push the surface water towards the overflow.

How thick glass/acrylic do you have? or if you know, does the riptide support?

I have the prototype running a 300 gallon peninsula. With half inch glass.

I think I will get a riptide. Early reviews have been very promising. If I recall, isn't the estimated price around 300 +/- ?
From what I've been told that's about the right price point. If they stay at that price point I think they'll do really well in the market.
Does it remember it's last setting if the power goes out?
Yes they do

But I do need add a disclaimer.

I AM BETA TESTING A PROTOTYPE. the controller and pump for the beta tests do not resemble the market version. From what a representative at coralvue told me that the controllers will have more features and be better quality as well will the pump. I do believe that the prototypes where just slapped together and here's why. The beta tests where free versions that maxspect wanted hobbyists to try and see how they worked and held up in real aquariums. They put out a hundred or so of the betas. Just think of how much money there putting out there just for hobbyists to try there product. If I was running it the controller would be the part of the pump I would put less into. And really the betas where just meant to see how they ran in an actual aquarium.

You guys don't know how bad I want to post a video of how the riptide pushes water 8' across the top of my tank. It even makes vortechs at the opposite end

Do you have it on the overflow side or the opposite end?
It's set up on the overflow side.
I def want one. Kinda bummed they aren't offering pre orders.

I think it's funny they are gunna be $300...right about the same price an mp40 sells for used. Lol
If they keep that price point they will do some damage in ecotech sales.
