Esteban why don't u just switch to instant ocean? I swear I saw no difference when I switched. So much cheaper too.

I wanna look into the salinity probe. Think it's worth it?

Io is what I use, it's been consistent batch after batch after batch

First off wanna say, "D-Bone, you were right!" My salinity is way high. It's 1.031 and it is very likely the salinity in that bucket was 1.034. I had my water tested by Robert Ellis, out of fear that my calibration fluid was "too salty". Sure enough he tested it and it was off.

I've been doing wc's with 1.032 water for the last few weeks including a 45 gallon water change that killed my favorite acro a week ago. All I can say is my Sps that are alive are some diehard mothaf$&-@&!

So What did I do wrong? I didn't cross check my calibration fluid with rodi. By that I mean I didn't ZERO out my refractometer ( I never do this in fact.) and then test the actual calibration fluid. If I had done this it would have saved lots of acropora and especially years of growth on other corals.

I guess moral of the story is, your refractometer is probably one of the easiest tools to use and also the best tool to keep your tank balanced when you calibrate it correctly. If you put all of your eggs in one basket you are bound to fail. Always cross reference.

Esteban is feeling: retarded
I have found Rodi can still be wrong so I cross check with distiller water instead. Just my two cents.

Technically a fracto is supposed to be calibrated with a solution unless it was designed to be calibrated with water. Reason being is the refractive index is totally different between the two and can skew results.

That's why I went with Vee Gee, it was designed to be calibrated with distilled water. That's one of the main reasons I got it. Read a couple stories online about people using pinpoint calibration fluid and 6 months later realizing the fluid was off. No thanks

I never had problems using RODI!
How would you know you never had an issue if you never properly calibrated with fresh calibration fluid? Now unless you have a seawater fracto that was designed to be calibrated with distilled water then I guarantee you that your readings are skewed by a few points. NOW for most the few points off don't really make a difference but to anal guys such as me and a few others it does.

That's what I'm saying, the difference in the two is only a few points on the scale which as long as everything else is fine doesn't create an issue but again to the anal retentive people such as I I like using what is designed to calibrate my fracto with. However buying new calibration fluid constantly gets old so I'm gonna be picking up a veegee
