So recently my yellow tang died out of the blue. Two days later all of my fish were infested with ich. I mean I have had ich before but this time it was feirce an quick. I ended up loosing my pair black and white clowns, my pair for regular clowns, my tomini tang and my royal garamma. all of which had been in my tank more than six months. the only survivors were my yellow wrasse and engineer goby.

Now my question is do I have to get my fish out and have my tank fishless for 8 weeks to get rid of the ich in my tank? or can I leave the fish in since they survived and have the ich go through its cycle and be ich free in about 8 weeks?

You input is much appreciated.

Depends on what you want. I think if you want an ich free tank you need to QT the fish and use copper to treat and leave the DT fallow for 8 weeks. If you just want to cripple the ich in the short term and try to control it by reducing stressors then use a reef safe ich killer.

From what I understand the reef safe stuff only kills ich in one stage of its life and wouldn't eradicate it from your system. It may not show again due to fish health but it'll always be there. This is just what my research has found. When I last had an ich attack I didn't know enough to save any fish...sucked!

My advice is to pick the method (after lots of research) you're most comfortable and confident in while measuring the risks/rewards of each option. Good luck!

even if you keep the tank fallow for 8 weeks when you intro new fish they might have ick, you really dont know if the fish has ick or not. like the poster above said ick wont show when the fish is healthy only when sick or stressed.

+1

You'd basically need to QT and treat every fish you introduce to your DT appropriately to be sure to not introduce ick with it. But then the corals and inverts that you might add complicate things since the water those have might infect your tank. To be clear I'm not saying that inverts/corals can host ick; I'm just saying that the water on them (a drop or two or more) when you transfer them to your tank could intro ick (sounds unlikely but within the realm of possibility).
The more I think about it the more difficult it seems to be absolutely positively ick free. But it can't hurt to try I suppose.

Hypo has not worked for me very well. I always go back to cupramine. Just don't use that stuff on pygmy angels.

only 3 things can "get rid" of ich
1. No fish
2. Hyposalinity osmotic shock treament
3. Copper treatment

Some strains have been shown to stay dormant over 6months. Some survived hypo of <1.008 for months. Some have become so resistant to copper that the copper concentration required to kill them would kill any fish.

Also, ich can be brought into your tank on rocks, coral, water as stated above.

So just do one of the above, choose specimens carefully, avoid stressors, feed well, etc.
