well idk how much good info i can tell u...but i just set up a refugium with it...cost me like $90...its hard to say if ive noticed any diff...but i went from no refugium to a refugium with MM...but if i had to do it over again i think i would just do a deep sand bed...i think the whole "Miracle" is just a way to get people to but the product...look it worked for me lol supposedly the mud has all these amazing nutrients in it...but i think the DSB would have prolly done the same thing for less than half the price

It's okay but I do believe more macro In a fuge is better than a layer of mud. If you are doing low nutrient levels leave this out of your Berlin method. Always good to go both methods biological and mechanical but if your All about low nutrients why make a wasteland.?

I'm at the point of either swapping it out for new or trying just a thin layer of sand based on the manufacturer and online recommendations. I myself can't say whether my tank is better or worse with it to be honest.

A DSB is a different concept than the mud.

i think the concept is different in the beginning...with MM u get all the nutrients right away...with the DSB u have to establish it

The warehouse and showroom is in laguna hills near the border w/ lake forest.. there's an article on it on reefbuilders.

http://reefbuilders.com/2011/05/24/ecosystem-aquarium-showroom/

I was told from a nearby LFS that he's establish his system to a point where he never does water changes, feeds a heavily stocked (tangs, angels, etc) 600 gallon fish only tank only once every two weeks maybe, and doesn't dose.... its entirely almost self sustaining whether ya wannna believe it or not... otherwise, swing by if you're in south OC...

I stop by once on a saturday but it was closed :(....

the creator of MM has devoted his life and research on this stuff so I hope for his sake it works...

I guess I meant they both employ anaerobic bacteria to filter nitrate out, however the mud has trace elements and minerals as well that the sand supposedly doesn't have which is how they seem to market the product. The fact that we can't really test for a lot of those things leaves the question of if the mud actually replenishes this better than what a water change would do. I don't have a clue myself.

SCRK had Leng Sy at our meeting a couple of months ago and he discussed the tank. He similarly ran another tank right next to his method (skimmer, sock , etc) and his tank seems to be doing quite well. It was very interesting and just shows that there are so many different methods of filtration in our hobby that hobbyists have been successful with.

I used it on my tank for over a year, can't say if it helped or not.

I dont have a sectioned sump so no go this time around but if I was running a softy tank I would like to have a skimmerless tank with this methodology.

I was on the move to run this on my refugium til I saw the price tag and realize i'll stick with a DSB that's a quarter of the cost running MM.

recently modified a 60 gal tank to a refugium? built a plenumand added 2 inched of crushed coral. added 60 mangrove plants and added more crushed coral to anchor the mangroves. it has been up and running for three weeks now. my total water capacity is about 450/500 gals. 300 gal inside, 300 gal sump outside. I do a 50 gal water chance weekly. inside tank has about 13 med to large tangs outside sump has about 10 med to large angels and tangs. inside tank has sps lps anemone, etc. my nitrates build a little at the end of the week 10 ppm sometimes more. since the addition of the plenum mangroves and deep sand bed my nitrates hardly vary. i still do my water changes and monitor water quality weekly. Before i can say exactly if it will make a difference or not is after a year or so and see if the bacteria level in the plenum will cause any damage. right now i am extremely happy with the results i am seeing
