Took off Wednesday night, came back Sunday night, and my Piece of the Ocean was doing great! Could have stayed longer, Just put glass on top of Aquarium to limit evaporation! Worked very nice! :perfect10:

yet again...

most reefers prob spent their vacation $$$ on their tanks...

its OK because they're so worried about their "investment" that they dont want to leave town anyway...

so they end up staying home and spending that souvenir $$$ on a limited edition frags and have to justify it to their significant other who spots it right away and nags him straight to the bar...

Technically speaking, your tank can survive on it's own for a good amount of time. To exactly what that time frame is goes with out saying as each tank is different. My display lasts for over 7 days on it's own. All my fish looked healthy, and my tangs were still nice and fat. My system was up and running for 8 months in the new tank and 3 years in the old tank, so the rocks are full of stuff for both the wrasse and the tangs to eat. If you set up and auto feeder with spectrum pellets in it, you should be good for at least 5 days. Longer if you have an ATO system, as the water that is depleated is being replaced by the ATO. Technically at that stage the aquarium should be pretty much self sustaning until the food runs out.

When you return make sure to do a good sized water change as, as the conditions begin to deteriorate, the fish and corals might get more and more stressed and begin releasing toxins and proteins in to the water column.

As for shutting the sump off from the rest of the system. Becareful as you will no longer be able to utilize the sumps extra water volume/skimming power or denitrifying power among other things, such as media reactors, ATO units, Calcium reactors etc... if you don't have some of these then don't worry about it.

I do have to say that on the occasion that I run out of top off RO water, I have turned my sump off to the display and just left my Mp40w on higher than normal to no adverse affects., for those of you who know my tank was loaded with corals.

In short, when leaving on vacation it is always a good idea to have someone at least check on the tank while you are gone. Make sure no water is leaking, no check valves have exploded etc... Remember: Thinking throughly, common sense and care can save you a ton of money!

Happy Vacationing!

We had a thread on this like 2 months back.

Jesse I'm glad you know that you can enjoy freedom from your tank once in a while.

I was the same; sweating it, concerned, wanted to set up a cam and more crap.

I just did dry runs 6 weeks prior and started to feed once a day. Why the once a day? Because I knew my sister wouldn't come twice a day to do it.

I set up a triple the volume ATO reservoir for whatever reason I had to stay in Cozumel for an extra week it was not an issue.

My sister fed once a day heavily. I know because the phosphates and nitrates were up there when I got back.

I didn't even look at the apex when I was gone.

I said to Myself "I am no slave to anything much less this." I have spent easily 2-3k on my Sps collection.

If I can't enjoy my vacation, I can't enjoy life. I know the day I'm out of this hobby, the first thing I'm doing is spending the money on a 2 week vacation for my family.

Back to the topic: only thing that worried me when I was gone was the possibility of a power outage. In the main tank i have a Power back up connected to my return. Why only to the return?
Because it's only using 70 watts and it creates plenty of flow and circulation. How long will this back up last? It lasted 5 hours and still was going. So who knows?

im not running anything special with the sump just the skimmer and a gang of hair algea :p
im keeping a powerhead on down there to keep things moving and as for the tank im sooo not worried,, ive had other feed before,, disaster to say the least,, even with showing them exactly what to feed and how much, i keep my systems and collection simple for what wickedfish stated kinda... i dont want to be a slave to my system more then i already am, i love this hobby but i do have other things i enjoy as well and dont like the whole worrying about this or that with my reef hobby when im trying to enjoy other things...

i enjoy having full control over "weather" conditions as well,, hence my switch box,, timers would be ideal for later so i can set up tidal changes for a consistent raise or drop of flow during each day and add my storm every now and then like i do "stir sand a bit, turn both k4's on and the return pump all together is like 3000 gph, gets a lil rough in there and the flow is erratic, i stir the sand a little to get stuff in the water same as if a storm came through over a reef pushing waves through stirring up the muck... the zoas LOVE it... other times i kill everything down to just the return so its mildddd flow clear waters ,, thats actually probably the main phase of the tank run it light when its full lights, sometimes kick on a k4 to liven things up :) sorry i like to ramble

Interesting concept. They should make a setting on the RKE or the APEX so that the controller will do this automatically.
