What salt do you use?

What about 200g boxes of IO or RC?
I can't compete with big box retailers like chewy or petco for IO/RC, my cost is similar to what they sell to the general public when using their coupons.. I used to actually buy from petco on their repeat orders plan when I ran IO for my qt tanks..

RC and buffer as needed. I stopped buying the pricey stuff once I realized it’s all the same salt buffered to specs.
The German salts and Red Sea are a little different than io. Germans are completely synthetic, Red Sea is dehydrated salt water reconstituted and brought to x levels, io is mined salt.

Was using RC for quite a while, but got kinda tired of many hours required to get salt to mix cleanly without cloudiness.

Recently switched to HW Marine salt and really like how fast it mixes together and it matches my parameters nicely. Would consider switching back to a "cheaper" salt. Running mostly LPS with a handful of SPS, I don't think the LPS are too particular on salts, For me, the cheaper salts just tend to be lower on magnesium than what I would prefer to run at (+1350 ppm).

My main motivation for starting with RC was due to it being the salt by LFS uses. I liked knowing if I had an emergency and needed to do a large water change, I could rely on LFS saltwater in a pinch.

Used to use Red Sea Pro for the longest time, but as my tank became more LPS heavy, realized my tank cannot utilize the higher parameters especially since I have a Calc reactor and the alk would stay 13+ sometimes if the calc reactor was on just a bit. Mixed a new batch to find it mixed at 12 sometimes decided to switch over to IO this month as it is the cheapest and the Calc reactor should take care of the rest.

hopefully nothing blows up

Curious to know the motivation for a calcium reactor with LPS tank, as they're most commonly used in SPS dominate tanks. I've heard SPS tanks being able to get away with 2-part or Kalkwasser for a while before needing a calcium reactor.

that’s a good question

The whole set up is ten years old, when it was at once an SPS tank, but as life went on, it went through a softies phase, an LPS stage, and now maybe a mixed reef stage. All while having the same equipment of the 10+ year old skimmer, lighting and calc reactor.

maybe it is time for an upgrade after all…

Gotcha, a tank that's lived many lives and iterations haha. That must be a reliable calcium reactor to still be kicking it after all these years

Any excuse is a good excuse to upgrade ;)

I have a lot of complaints about it, a lot of which I DIYed out or replaced parts for, but it works with some maintenance. It’s a Georeef one, one of the first generations.

Looking at their recent models, it seems all the quirks I had qualms about have been modified and fixed so good on them for listening to feedback (not mine but I’m sure others had the same complaints)
