I want to setup my mixing station and ATO container. I bought two of the gray Brute Rubbermade trash cans. Does anyone use these for their tanks? I know they will hold the water fine but I am wondering if they might leach anything into the water, anyone have any experience or advise on them?

I use them too however I remember reading an article a few years ago about marine biologist using them for some kind of fry or something and that the brutes were having higher mortality rates then otherwise containers they were using. I had posted the link on a site that isn't around anymore.

I use one on my 120 as a ato reservoir. Works just fine for me......i hope
Have you ever tested the phosphates in your ATO reservoir after a few days? Thats just what im worried about. Maybe ill fill mine up with RODI water and let it sit for a few days then test for phosphates and also test the TDS reading after a few days.

I use them. I am having issues now but not with po4 in my tank, and my tank was super healthy in CA. Eric told me his was leaching phosphates into his tank a while back but I never had any problems. I say go for it! :)

I use a 20g Brute trash can with lid and rollers hidden in my shoe closet. The tank ATO line goes through the wall and into the closet for auto refill. With the wheels, I can move the brute trash can into the kitchen where my RODI sits and have it filled up once every 2 weeks.

I did some reading up on this a while back. Sometimes you'll find a number stamped into the plastic telling exactly what material it's made of. If it's food safe, I feel better using it.

From a quick search, below is a quick reference. Anything not a 1 or 2 is known to leak one thing or another.

Cheap thin walled trash cans are generally made of (LDPE) Low-density polyethylene #4 , which is rated "ok" for food.
Thicker walled trash cans can be made of (HDPE) High density polyethylene #2, rated "good" for food.
If you can find something made of (PET or PETE) Polypropylene #1, you've found food grade plastic.
