OK time for an update. All 3 pieces of glass are in. I'm a little PO'd at myself, I lost my balance with the big front pane and put a deep 2" scratch in one of the side panes. Guess I will have to live with it cause I'm not cutting the scratched piece out and replacing it. All 3 pieces added 150lbs to the tank. I'm going to let the silicone cure until next weekend. This weekend I will get my holes for the closed loop and return drilled. I picked up and Reeflo snapper from toromp (Luis) last week so I think that is now going to be my return pump and the Dart will be for the CL. After going back and forth with Reeflo tech support ( they were great and answered all my questions) I found out that these pumps can get pretty warm actually down right hot. I'm going to build a wall to enclose the pumps and keep the heat out of the rest of the stand. The Mag 18 that was going to be my return will not be used for the skimmer, just need to get a needle wheel impeller for it. In order to use the snapper for return I will have to replace the end piece of glass in the 55g I was going to use for a sump. I did check and it is tempered all round so I will just change it for regular glass I can drill. Ok enough talking, here is a couple of pictures.

I epoxied the outside and if I were to do it again, I wouldn't. Scraches easily and is almost impossible to buff it to a gloss again. I will spray it black.

I usually prefer silicone in boobs. This is all the extra that squeezed out and I had to trim off.

I will upload pics when I get the bulkheads in and plumbing done.

Anyone have any feedback? Catch anything that will go horribly wrong that I missed?

It's all good, they are definatly not so pretty but I'm kinda attached to them so I have to haul them around all the time. Could be worse, I could have a club foot.

Thank you my Schnitzel. It turned ok well. There are a lot of imperfections and areas I would like to redo but they are on the back wall and I can hide them with rock. Maybe even do a foam wall down the road. This was an experiment and I've never worked with this epoxy before. Lets see what happens when I add water.

Gumbii.

That tank was a freebee. It's a 100g built with 1/2" thick glass. the trim is all busted upon it so I grabbed it to try and salvage the glass for ?????

Alright ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls the moment we have all been waiting for......

WATER!!!!!!!!

Half full, god I hate filling a tank for the first time.

Houston we have a full tank

Absolutly no leaks. The front has no real measureable deflection. The back is about 3/16" but I will have to recheck without water. I'm going to let it sit full for a couple weeks to make sure if there is anything that needs to leech out of the epoxy, it will. I got nervious when filling because the stand and tank were creeking and settling so I screwed some scrap plywood to the stand (more for piece of mind) to prevent racking. Wouldn't have happened, I've seen people set plywood tanks with 4 cinder blocks and never had a problem.

After this sits for a while I will drain it and drill holes for the bulkheads and get the plumbing in. Still need to skin the stand and build a canopy. Build an LED set up (probably aquastyle.com) and replace the end glass on my sump. and, And AND, the list is never ending.

Anyone have any advise? Notice anything I should have done and can still change?

U talking returns or drain? My tank has 2-3/4" bulkheads, and are placed one on each corner of the tank. IMO I think it kinda sucks cuz the returns blow right towards my center overflow. I think a good setup is center overflow with returns coming up from the center pointing towards the outside corners. I would imagine you would get better filtration. Idk if that makes sense

Makes sense to me. Better to have the flow bouncing off the sides, then the front glass, before it hits the overflow, as opposed to just hitting the front glass... Allows for more thorough dispersal and mixing of the water, amd makes sure that you're not just filtering the same water over and over while the nutrient-laden water sits in the display without getting skimmed or filtered.

Hi Mike, how ya been? Did I tell you my husband is a Marine? I didn't know you were... or ARE... Once one, always one, right :) No surprise that you are such a nice guy. I'll never forget how you were so nice to help me out with advice when I was going through saltwater hell in the beginning! Thanks again! :)

Cool build! I'll be following the progress...

I don't know if I can explain this without a pic but here goes. I have an external center overflow with 2x1.5 drains and 1-1" drain to feed the skimmer. I was going to put 4-3/4" returns on the back along the top facing towards the front. For the closed loop, I have 2x1.5" drains I was going to put on the bottom near the back corners. For the CL returns I was going to use 4-1" fittings pointed towards the back and 2-1" fittings connected to pipe that will run behind the rock. I was thinking this in theory will give me a circular motion with the water. Does this make sense?

OK time to bring this back from the dead. I have literally had 0 time to do anything to my build for the past couple months but I did manage to rough together a skimmer. These are only temperary fittings and stuff just to see how its going to work. I had a Mag 18 laying around and decided before I spend money on an impeller and venturi I would mod the stock impeller. I used a butane powered soldering pencil to melt notches in the impeller. I did all 6 blades and kinda monkeyed a venturi together. Well the pump went from 1800gph to about 150gph, crap. Took it apart again and temparily wrapped tape around 4 blades and tried it again. Now I get about (best guess) 1200-1400gph. The venturi is just a hole drilled in a union and an air line stuffed in it.

Took a 5g water bottle and cut the top off and drilled some holes for fittings. hooked up the Mag and a feed pump and gave it a go. not bad for a hack venturi and make shift impeller.

Makes pretty dense foam

I will probably get a proper impeller and venturi. My only complaint is that it is kinda loud, maybe it will be better when I change the impeller.

Anyone have suggestions to make this better?
