Planning on buying a skimmer. I wanted to know if bigger is better when it comes to skimmers. I am comtemplating between the two sizes. One is rated for 160 gallons and the other for 250 gallons. I have a 30x30x18 equaling 70 gallons. Can overskimming be bad for your tank?

Hello,

Kinda rule regarding skimmers is total water volume plus another half. So a 100 gallon system would use 150 gallon heavy stock skimmer. I don't believe you can over skim since skimmer will only skim what's there.

Interesting...
I have two different opinions. Both make good points. Any skimmer experts out there??

What size skimmer do you use on your system?

i wish it was that easy.
the skimmer ratings that the manufactures put on there skimmers are a joke and are not accurate for the most part.
i will give you an example
http://www.marinedepot.com/Coralife...ers-Coralife-ES33000-FIPSISNW-ES33004-vi.html

here is a big name skimmer from MD that is rated for 220gallons-yeah right
it would probally work OK on a 40 gallon breader...bioload and what your going to keep in your tank play a huge role in choosing a skimmer.
skimmers do pull out good and bad, but its alot easier if your skimmer is overated you can just run it for less time or if your colors look faded-feed more. but if you buy a skimmer that cant handle you load-your sscrewd.

i always skim alot and feed alot...
when i buy a skimmer i buy the biggest that can fit in my sump and in my budget:)

which skimmers are you looking at?

there are alot of bad and good skimmers out there..

here a few good ones...

high end- ATB, Bubble King

mid end- Warner Marine/skimz, SWC, Bubble magus, reef octopus

good luck

dave

Then i should go with the skimmer that is rated for 160 gallons. Thanks and anyone who don't thinks bigger is better...

Ok here's my theory....it depends also in the quality of the skimmer. Example: I would rather have a Reef Octopus rated for 150 than an ASM rated for 250. Quality better than quantity. Not that ASM is a horrible skimmer. But IMO the super reef octopus is a sweet skimmer...yes kind of biased opinion because I have one. Lol

It all depends on how many, and how big the fish you are planning on putting in your tank! I have a 90g tank with a 20g sump, but my rock takes up about 25g water space so now I'm looking ate about 75g, and I use a reef octopus skimmer rated at 300g because I have very large fish in my tank, and also I have a lot of them! I know peeps say you can't do it, but Ive done it for like 6 months and I run a full reef tank, sps, lps, and softies!

Oh, also I run a phosphate reactor rated for a 250g tank, and another reactor for a 150g tank so thats 400g's of reacting! I call it over reacting!!!

One thing though, if you are over skimming, and over reacting, you must add your trace elements, and amino acids, consistently, along with 30% or more on your water changes!!!!

Good Luck!

Sounds about right, but that whole adding supplement is off. It will only prove cool until you miss a day of dosing.

So if you are over skimming (Sps lack color but are not brown) a fish or two added is best so you can achieve balance. Honestly its easy to over skim. My skimmer BK 250 SM was guilty of it until I added a good 6-11 fish on top of the 10 I had. I added shamu 9" Naso and it was all nastiness, he had to go.

So getting the right fit is relatively important between load and equipment.

I have had ASM'S ,Octopuses, and now I have Cad Lights 1350. This thing is a beast ! I would recommend a " cone " type skimmer. They seem to produce a lot more waste.

You need to know how heavy is your bio load. I would recommend going at least twice the rated volumn on the skimmer. So if you have 100gal, get one that is rated at least for 200 gal. Get the biggest one you can afford and also biggest you can fit in your sump. You will thank me later.

I was always told the rule is to dbl down.
Skimmer says 100 gal it's good for a 50 gal tank.
Agree with mr.plant

Ya I agree on the cone...had a Nac6 skimmer and sold it for the Nac7 skimmer which is almost identical besides the fact that it's a cone. And IMO it seemed to pull out a lot more gunk. The quality of the skimm was nastier. If that makes sense

Also the neck on that cadlights skimmer looks real small at the top. In comparison to my reef Octo. Wonder if there's a plus or minus to that....?
