what do you use to calibrate your refracto

just curious if people are calibrating properly , also if people are using a salt/brine refracto or an actual seawater refracto. The two are not the same. lets discuss

I use the calibration solution. I don't think most people even realize how far off their refracts are. We calibrate the at the shop several times a week. Ro/di water is usually off by enough for me not to use it.

How far off is it then??? Cause Ive been using RO for 5 years and corals are doing great!!! So If I'm wrong, my corals are not complaining, may I add they are super colorful & healthy!!!

I wasn't saying all your stuff is going to die because you don't use calibration solution, but when you have over $20,000 in coral why take chances. You can take a crap in your tank to cycle it, but most don't.

i use RO water for calibration as well. no problems at all. of course its better to buy the solution but the hobby is already expensive as it is. The key is to be consistent with your measurements. if you used RO water, keep using RO water so that your parameters are not swinging.

good stuff omar. but the crazy part is steve garrett tested my aqua at the meeting 1.026 now you have me doubting myself. im gonna have to buy me a new refractormeter and solution. cereal biz here mang.

Yes but what is his fracto calibrated with? Theres usually a 3-4 point differnce between the two fluids. Fractos calibrated with water always read higher then what the sample actually is.
