there are so many great tanks posted here, lots of smart reefers, but how did YOU get there?

have you had a tank since 1st grade? is this your 10th reef tank, or did you read, lurk and go slow to get your 1st tank perfect?
do you refresh the socalireefs webpage 100 times per day, and switch tabs to RC, 3reef, R2R? or are you the padawan of a Jedi reefer?
are you a reef bookworm at Barnes & Nobel? do you subscribe to a reefing magazine? have you published in a biology journal?
do you have a bachelors degree in marine biology? how about a doctorate?
do you have a fish business and learn by necessity, or are you an LFS groupie who picks the brains of others? do you go reef-clubbing?

all of the above?

where did you learn THE MOST about how to keep such a great tank?

I am a terrible reefer. And that surprising because my parents owned a tropical fish store in Santa Monica growing up. Plus after they closed the store my father became a rep for lee mar. I always had a tank in my room and my Dad made me take care of it. But I still fail :)

smartest thing so far is breaking it down... my next setup will fix every thing that i hated about my first two setups...

i've also had some sort of fish tank in my house all my life... then started breeding all kinds of freshwater stuffs... so i started moderating a couple of forums... a koi forum, aquatic connection, rate my fish tank, goldfishparadise and duboisi.org forums... most of them had a reef section, so i've been reading about SW/reef for 10 years before i got a tank... so i knew what everything was and how stuff worked...

i don't claim to know everything... i'm not smart in this hobby... always learning new stuff... i went to school to be a mechanic... LOL...

I wish my Dad started with a bigger tank. That way I wouldnt need to keep dreaming of upgrading my 14 year old tank..... Other than having an old 55g acrylic tank Im glad i went through the love and hate relationship with this hobby. This recent year of actually being in to reef keeping I can say being active and reading forums and meeting others reefers sure made this hobby more easier then ever. Only thing I lack would probably the funds for proper equipment.

A lot of money and trials, Books, Forums. What I have learned is not to buy wild colonies as much as possible, don't look at the coral on top of the water when buying corals.

I consider websites like this intelligence from the frontline, from troops in the trenches. Where the rubber meets the road.

I am thankful to the people that speak real truths in detail. Especially about failures and successes.

I remember going on RC believing the beginner forum was all I was worthy of and for people like me that had only read a few months before taking the plunge into SW tanks. And i thought that the rest of the forums had nothing but people with great success since they talked fish.

Truth is the elitism in this hobby is a small fraction of the big pie of modest and average Joes setups, that actually exist.

There are many guys who have great success that like to hush about it. That type of selfishness is why I think a lot of people in this hobby struggle.

If you go to someones house and see stuff wrong and you can help nail it down, and get them in the right direction....

WTF not help a guy out. People help people, animals do as well at times so what does that make a selfish SW keeper?
