My Tank Build
Good to compare notes. I’m running ozone at night for a couple hours, targeting ORP 380.

I noticed that not too many people run ozone anymore. It may be too old school. Glad to see someone else still using ozone. I did consider taking it down since the benefit is unknown. I do it mainly for the smell removal since the tank is right in my living room / dining room.

I think a lot of people don’t run it because they’re afraid of it back in the day before there was controller. If you overdid it, you could poison your whole family. But now with ORP controllers, it’s a lot easier and safer. Also, the cost is really high, but it ends up paying off in the long run because you don’t have to run carbon

Man! I had 2 major catastrophes in as many days.

First I’ve been forgetting to turn off the rodi when I manually fill the sump. I have the ATO, but I never set it up so I ordered a float valve so it won’t happen anymore the night before the float came I forgot to shut off the RODI. The next morning, I was heading out to work when I got the feeling that I should go check on the tank. The garage was flooded and the sump was overflowing. My sanity dropped to 1.010. I dumped a gallon of salt in the sump and had to take off to work when I got back. I was expecting everything to be dead. I checked my salinity and it was at 1.018 and nothing had died except for the cleaners shrimp. I dumped another half gallon of salt in the sump and got the salinity up to 1.022 then the next day I got it up to 1.026. That’s when I noticed some things started to die, but there was no major losses.

Then the return hose came moved from the pump and soaked everything. This happened at night so when I went into harvest, the plank and I noticed that the fish tank had no power. I fried my zeovit reactor controller. And a power brick to one of the kessils.

Dang dude thats rough. Sorry to hear about your losses what a bummer. I'm sure you will save most of it and be back up and running in no time. In this hobby its always something isn't it.

So here’s what we look like. I’m starting to get colors now that my levels are stable ever since I put my CARX online. So the fresh water incident did a number on my sand bed. It was completely covered in diatoms. It was all brown. I’ve been dosing bacteria and a carbon source and it’s starting to bounce back.

Looking good. Hopefully, the losses are minimal. All of the corals look unfazed.

Let us know what you lost, and if I have extras of those...I'll give you a frag.

The only thing I lost that I really wanted was my bowser zoas. I lost a Favia and some sps that I forgot the name of. The others where some frags of stuff I have

I have some bowsers I can trade you a frag for some phyto. I know Oceanside seems far but I am right off the freeway just 45min. south of Irvine depending on traffic. It takes longer to get to LA from there.

Cool! I’ll have to see when we can make it out there. Maybe we’ll hit up balboa park. We’d be coming down the 15 so it might be faster than the 5

Automation is key to success. ATO is the most important part of the system IMO.

For sure. I’m just in a traditional phase right now. Not really happy with my Neptune equipment so I’m making the switch. My trident has been down for a couple months and I’m just over it.

Well, my sand bed was brown from all the diatoms but I’ve been dosing bacteria and a Carbon source and the sand bed is looking better

I was at my friends store the other day and we got to talking about Hydros & Neptune. He runs Hydros on all of the systems in his shop. He also runs a tank maintenence service. After we spoke and agreed upon how much better Hydros is, he took me in the back to show me the full rack of malfunctioning Neptune gear that he has removed from his clients tanks. ATO's that wouldn't turn off, DOS units that won't dose, EB power bars that are dead after 6mo.....

His overall analysis after running both systems for many years is that Neptune is overpriced hobby grade equipment and Hydros is resonably "expensive" professional grade equipment. For the same level of what you will get with 1 Maven with testing sensing, probing, drive ports and ability to control up to 8 WiFi devices for $1200-$1300, you would need to spend $2500-$3000 on inferior Neptune products for the equivalent. Neptune better step up their game or they will soon find themselves out of it.

I agree. At first I was going to switch to profilux but I decided on Hydros. Hydros is made in the USA, water proof (to a point), and the maven just put them over the top.

Neptune has really dropped in quality since BRS bought them (the company that bought BRS) and so has ecotech. I’ve had so many problems with the wet sides of my MP pumps that I replaced them with gyres

I wanted to use profilux as well but, they never got their shit together. After waiting for the release of to ionD for over 3 years I gave up. After looking into the differences between Hydros and Neptune I chose Hydros. At the time I was planning to eventually runa Mastertronic with it. Then I saw the Maven and I figured I could wait a few more months.
