    55-gal LPS/ safty tank

Hey guys, (Sorry, should be "softy," not quite sure what "safty" is...) Got into the hobby a couple of years ago, with a 55-gal tank that I had great aspirations for. It wan not drilled, so I had all my equipment hanging in the tank, taking up space, and creating bubbles. I had decent success...

    skimmer question

Overskimming? What issue do you have? Are you worried about stripping trace elements? What size tank and what skimmer do you have?

    50g skimmer

I'm using a R/O BH-2000 on my 55. Used to be a hang-on, now its modified and in the sump. Love this skimmer, and it isn't loud at all.

    Anti-siphon holes

So, I'm finishing up the return section on my 55, and instead of putting a check valve in it, started to think about anti-siphon holes in the u-tubes. The tank has a 700 gph return pump that t's off into two half inch u-tubes. If I were to drill anti-siphon holes, where should they be on the...

    Dynoflagellates

I battled the same type of "brown stuff" for a good couple of months on a newer tank. It's just as you described it. Brown, formed mats on the substrate, and released air bubbles, (byproduct of photosynthesis). If we had the same problem, it would bloom during the day, but almost disappear at...

    4 Bulb Combo

Done a bit a research, but just want to see what everyone thinks. 55 gal. 48"x18"x" in. Won't be keeping SPS. I currently have a 4x T5 Aquaticlife system, and am ditching the stock bulbs for some better ones. I'm thinking... 2X ATI Aquablue Special- claimed 15K color with elevated blue 1x ATI...

    Hammer Corals took a spill

Sorry guys, but this is about the best picture I can get with my phone... The green algae is a different story, which I have already asked about on the 'algae' forum.

    Coral Beauty a brat!

Hey guys, I have a Coral Beauty Angelfish that has a bit of an attitude problem. First of all, I know they can be risky in a reef environment due to their tendency to pick at things, but it's the wife's fish and cannot go, for then she'll get upset, and the entire tank will be at risk. I had a...

    Hammer Corals took a spill

I recently returned from work to discover that my hammer coral frag had been knocked off the rocks and was lying face down in the sand. I used to have full extension/inflation/whatever the correct term is, but since then (two days ago), it has not. Is this normal? There was quite a bit of mucus...

    Need some advice

I have a fairly new 55 gal tank, and I need some advice on this algae that is growing all over my rocks. It ranges in color from light to dark green, and is very hard to remove. I'm running a 2xT5 Aquaticlife lights, 0930-1730, (yes, this tank size requires at least 4xT5). I recently added some...

    Nitrates?

IMO, Salifert kits have been pretty reliable. I'm currently using am API kit that has been giving consistent and reliable results. May be a dumb question, but are you testing in the same spot, preferably away from return lines, to eliminate any variances?

Am I setting my skimmer wrong

How old is the tank that you transferred the skimmer to/ how heavy is the bioload? If there isn't a large bioload to add DOC's, combined with your recent water change, there might not be much to skim. After large water changes, my skimmer will stop producing foam for a while, then start up again...

    Newb Protein Skimmer Help

I have to agree with SchnitzelReef and suggest an SWC skimmer. Great luck and reliability with this brand. To reiterate, you should never skimp on the skimmer as it is essential in removing excess waste before it has the chance to turn to ammonia. Just a suggestion, and depending on your...
