So over the years I've had a few clown tangs. My current clown is probably the uniquest of them all. When I feed the fish his head alway turns a really dark blue.

It's pretty cool to see.

To help fight Edison costs I modified my lighting scheduled. I use to run 9am to 9pm. With 2 hour ramp up to 100% full power and 2 hour ramp down. My lights were running at full power during peek hours. Now they turn on at 5:30 and ramp up to 100% by 6am. Then at 11:30 am they start ramping down and by noon they're at 50%. Then they slowly ramp the red, green, and whites down so by 6pm only the blues r left on. Then at 8pm they're all off.

Eric, do you run a calcium reactor? You have great growth and color, but last time it seemed you weren't doing water changes too often. What's your secret?

Yea. I'm running a junk a** coralvue reactor.

The pump was junk on it so I modified it with a mag5.

I still don't do crap to the tank. I can't even remember when I've done the last water change. I haven't even tested the water sense November of last year. Mostly I don't even pay attention to the tank if it wasn't for the auto feeder the fish would have starved a long time ago.

I will say I do melt some media in that calrx tho. Cause I filled it up full 3 weeks ago and I would say a 3rd of it has already melted.

Ok so I still have the tank. Everyone that has been over and seen the tank says its way to scratched up. So I might as well keep it running.

So I've been neglecting the tank big time and I've developed a bit of a nuisance algae problem. It's some type of red turf algae. No it's not cyano

So I decided to set up another algae turf scrubber to see if it help with the red turf algae. I set it up above my fuge, using the 180watt led light to light the screen up. I T'ed the algae scrubber off one of my drain lines so I not use anyone electricity.

I set it up Thursday evening and in less then 3 days I've already started seeing algae growing on the screen.

I found some info on the type of algae it is

Gelidium, Red Wiry Turf Algae

Many species of short creeping red algae exist so the hobby generally lumps all of them under the heading "Gelidium", (the genus that is home to many of those species), and the common name Red Turf Algae, or Red Wiry Algae.

Manual Removal - Difficult. Macros that have fragile runners and creep along the rock are the hardest to manually remove. Do the best you can. Use a dental pick to do the most damage, DO NOT BRUSH. You will dislodge it and spread it. Yeah I know, it is boring as can be, but if you do it once surgically with a dental pick the problem goes away for good. If you can take the rock out, all the better.

Clean Up Crew- Emerald Crabs, urchins, sea hares, and large turbos.

Tip - Don't pass on frags with this stuff, don't put one in your tank. This algae has become extremely common on traded/aquacultured frags. So my advice is every time you add a coral or a rock look for it from now on.
